I am asking this question for my In Law he has been looking at the 460 and wanting to start pouring his own as well. How can you get 1700+ velocity out of cast boolits with out getting lead melted in your barrel?I noticed Buffalo Bore has a 360 gr. L.B.T.-L.F.N. (1,900fps/M.E. 2,860 ft. lbs.)Not that he will ever shot a 360 at those loads but even a 200 to 250 at those speeds seems like lead everywhere.
Maybe some one can explain what you mean by hard cast and also what do you use for those boolits to get them that hard so they dont melt.

I would believe all those loads are Gas Checked and should avoid the base getting melted.

I thought even with gas checks it seemed very hot still

Using a lube that can stand up to it and have a properly sized bullet you shouldn't have leading issues at those higher velocities.

Carnauba Red can take over 2500 FPS before it starts to get funky. I've even seen people say as much as 2800 FPS, but I haven't personally tested it to those levels.

Greetings
Hard cast means a hard lead mix as compared to pure lead or a 50 - 50 mix of wheeel weight & pure lead.
Leading is not only caused by velocity.. a rough bore, lube failure, undersized boolit ( possible the worse bugaboo ) exterene pressure applied to a bullets base.....
But generally a properly sized boolit with a gas check of a suffient strength mix can withstand alot of pressure.
I shoot a 265 grainer gas checked in my 414 Supermag Dan wesson. I have taken it to 1600 fps and NO leading has been observed. I shoot the same boolit in my 41 Mag Marlin rifle up to 1900 FPS and no leading is observed but recoil is a might stilff.

I have more experience with rifles than hand guns but the same applies. Make your boolit 1 or 2 thousanths over size in diameter, put a gas check on it with a good lube and you can easily drive the slug up to 2000 fps without leading with a good hard alloy. I routinely use a load in my M1 carbine that pushes the bullet out the muzzle at 1950 fps and have never had leading of any sort.
