In order to compete in our local 3 Gun Matches I need to make 150 PF (Vel x Bullet weight) using my Berretta Storm. Using 800X which is a slow powder I have a load from IMR indicating 5.3 gr under 147 Hornady XTP ran 1025fps out of their test gun. My question is with the longer barrel on the Storm can I expect slightly higher velocities running Plated bullets of the same weight.

I have seen documentation that the Storms will shoot 1400-1600fps with factory ammo in 9mm and 40cal.

I just picked one up in 40cal and I'm waiting to get it out and run some boolits through it. Love the feel of it so far. Way easy to clean.

Do a search for forums and you will find some good info.

IMHO : This will depend upon the bore diameter. Berretta having a well earned reputation for lager bore size. My 5” 92 is far slower than my 4” Smith. For instance. Shoot cast bullets of proper diameter and it should work. Especially with the slower powders.

I don't see any IMR powder with that high a velocity listed? AA #7 and a 147gr boolit will make major with a 29,300 CUP load. I've been sitting on a can of VV 3n38 for a couple months. It's supposed to be able to push a 147 Hornady to 1207 fps from a 4” barrel. I have the Magma 147gr FN if you'd like to try some of those boolits. The moulds cast at .358” and have some sized at .356 and .357. I ordered it as a 38 Super so it' would be a little larger. Have some Alliant 20/28 to try out in 9mm also. No load data but it's supposed to have burn rate close to Unique but more dense so you don't run out of room and should burn clean. Was going to try it with 124 grain bullets for a 1170 to1200 fps load. If you shoot a 124 at 1250 you'll have major. Pretty hot loads to do that. I used to run them that fast with 8.0 grains of blue Dot but primer pockets would loosen up after a few re loads. If you do pick up 50 fps with the extra inch of barrel the 124 grain bullets will make major with a fairly standard load. Of course you already know all this.

Personally I like a fast 124 over the 147 due to the torque effect from the 1-10” twist barrels. That may all be in my head though. The start load of the VV 3n38 is supposed to run the Hornady 147 to 1171 fps. Heck If I get that I may just stop there. Bought a box of the XTP's and if the VV powder works that and the 147-FN is my new walk about load. May need a stiffer recoil spring :-P

I have a Lyman mold that drops 147 gr boolits out at 156 gr. 5.5 gr of 800X will get me to major or close to it. I have found out of pistol length barrels 800X doesn't all get consumed. With the 16" Storm I may see all of it consumed. Gun will be here by Friday or Monday at the latest depending on the Post Office so it is time to load some test rounds. I am also going to try soe 124 gr plated using Titegroup to get up around 1200 fps.

If it hasn't been in your hot little hands yet, you will enjoy it. I have a laser sight on the way and I think I will be fighting the girlfriend for shooting time. I see my supply of 40cal loads depleating quickly.

Well now you tell me its a 16” carbine. They make a pistol names Px4 Storm. Enough to confuse me.
Lyman's 49th has 16” carbine data using a Ruger PC9. They show for the 124gr J bullet using power pistol a 140 fps increase. They'd probably run faster if you cut 4” off the barrel but that's probably unruly in Canada like it is here. I notice the velocity gain is much greater with light bullets than heavy. Thinking that may be due to increased bearing surface dragging it down in the last few inches. Or perhaps it's the increased powder volume used under the lighter bullets to help fill the long bore with gas?

Could you PM me the load data contained there for 124/125, & 147 gr bullets both lead and plated/FMJ?

Going to try 4.5 gr of 800X. Powder is slow and shoot keep ticking as it runs down the 16" barrel.

ps Will report results.
