i had a problem last time i was out shooting my 788 in .308
after about 7-10 shots, i worked the bolt as normal, and it just came out of the receiver. i thought maybe it was something i did(finger still on trigger) but it happened several times after that also. so my question is....maybe some dirt build up causing the bolt to release, or is some part of the receiver worn out now. I'm not that familiar with what keeps the bolt locked into place. much help needed please.
anyone ever have this problem with their 788???
thanks Waco

As I recall, the bolt release is incorporated in the safety. Did you inadvertently push the safety while opening the bolt?

It is possible the top of the bolt stop has sheared off. It is in the trigger assembly. Easy enough to replace the bolt stop, if you can find one. Or you can manufacture one yourself out of a double headed nail using a file and a hacksaw.

pull the action out of stock see if the safety has jumped on the other side of the bolt stop. the pin that holds it could have lose the keeper ring I dont have mine down here or could show you a pic
