Hi All;

I am brand new to casting, and math has not been one of my stronger qualities over the years. I want someone to please check my results for an alloy before I melt it.

If I take 2.33 lbs of a 20 to 1 lead/tin alloy, and melt it with 1 lb of linotype, I project that I will wind up with a 4.7% tin, 3.6% antimony, 91.7% lead alloy.

Question 1: is my math somewhere in the ballpark?
Question 2: if my figures are correct, will this alloy make decent 9mm bullets for low to mid power rounds.

Thank you very much.

John

John, go to the head of the class ... correct numbers
Q2 - I have no idea because I don't shoot the 9mm caliber

I believe generally we want to have about 2-3 times as much SB as Sn. If you have lino, my suggestion would be to make some 50/50 WW/lino alloy - it would approximate HB from RotoMetals, and would be stout enough for danged near anything. Even 2ww 1lino would be fine.

Hi Beetle,

Welcome! You can get a calculator fir this. Try a Google search for "bullet alloy calculator."

You get 91.70% Lead 3.60% Antimony 4.70% Tin
Perzactly correct. It won't hurt a thing but is more tin than needed.
I find that 9mm is one of the toughest to cast for.
I use 2-6-92 tin/antimony/lead for 9mm

Thanks for all of the replies. I downloaded the "Bullet Alloy Calculator"....awesome program! I am going to melt my first alloy tonight, and will cast my first bullets when my mold lube is delivered. I am really looking forward to this! Again, thanks everyone.
