Got a few more shot today in the 1892 20" Short Rifle...
Most accurate load tested yet too...
RCBS180CM...1.575" OAL...23.5 AA#1680...CCI300...StarLine case...1518 f.p.s.
At 50 yds. off my truck bed for a rest 5 went into a group 1-1/4" wide by 2-1/4" tall...:-D

And the fastest load so far also...
RCBS180CM...1.575" OAL...19.0 H2400...CCI300...Win case...1795 f.p.s.

and .5 grain less of the old H2400
RCBS180CM...1.575" OAL...18.5 H2400...CCI300...Win case...1743 f.p.s.

I'm no where near K. Waters load of 22.0 of H2400 that he said was too HOT!!! at 1856 f.p.s. but my velocities are gettin' close..
For reference Lyman #40 shows thier 180gr. PB #40043 as Max at 23.6gr of old H2400 for 1875 f.p.s.
Sure glad I started low or this would have been a disaster I bet...

I aquired a small lot of the Win 180JSP's and tried them with the 23.5 AA#1680 and they went 1557 f.p.s. in a nice round small group too...1-1/8"
Smaller than my best boolit load yet...

I think I'll go .5gr more with the old H2400 and see if pressures are too high... the load of 19.0gr was O.K.
On the AA#1680 it can go more to and I have high hopes it will do what H2400 will do and maybe a bit more at less pressure...

Say!

Thanks for the data as I am working up a deer load for my 38-40. Keep up the good work. For plinking and Cowboy shooting I am working with Trail Boss and for hunting I am working with 4227. My fun load is 35 grains of FFg.

KCSO--

Just for grins I tried The Holy Black in loads for my '73 x 44-40. It would put 5-6 in pretty decent clusters before fouling out--how are you controlling the fouling bit in your loads? My impression of the problems at the time were that 1) the boolit I was using didn't have sufficient lube capacity (I used SPG) and 2) wiping every 5 shots with a repeating carbine wasn't how things were supposed to work, given the carbine's 14-round capacity.

Did a Few More Today...
All were RCBS180CM sized .4015" and lubed with FL in StarLine cases and lit with CCI300's and seated too 1.575"
8.0 RedDot..........1396 f.p.s.
8.5 RedDot..........1449 f.p.s.
25.0 AA#1680.....1614 f.p.s.
19.5 H2400.........1808 f.p.s.
The real good one here was the 8.5 of RedDot extreme spread was 12 f.p.s. and 3 shots went in one hole at 50 yds. the other 2 were 1" out of the group of 3 but that was most likely my old eye's and full Buckhorn with a gold bead sight....

I need to replace them with a flat square notch rear and square post front as I do much better with that combo...:)

I loaded the H2400 load in cases that were on thier 4th loading and all look as good as new...so gonna go .5 grain more and match K.Waters load of 20.0 that he called the best load with H2400...may be I'm bout all it'll do in my rifle as the additional .5 grain gained a lousy 13 f.p.s. over the previous load of 19.0...
He did 21.0 and said that was good but warmish and 22.0 seperated his cases on the 1st loading...
