Im looking for something to store my clean alloys in. it needs to be portable. and needs to be able to hold 400 to 500lbs. Im thinking of building a box that will ride on a moving dolly. what do you all use? DR

Not as heavy as you're looking for, but mine are in surplus ammo cans. Sturdy, has a handle, and stacks well.....

Stacked up on the concrete floor in the basement, all 1300 lbs - separated by alloy

Mine is on the basement floor also

Not exactly sure how much I currently have
But the basement floor will not float away if I have a flood LOL

I store mine in 25# bricks. I uise 10# bricks for mixed casting alloy.
The 25 pounders stack up real nicely.

Old milk crates or the Universal 5-gallon bucket with lid.

If you have tools, make some boxes out of 3/4" plywood to fit your ingots. Use screws and Liquid Nails to put them together and cut elliptical holes near the top in the ends for handles.

I make boxes like this based on a 2x6 bottom wrapped with 8"-tall 3/4" plywood sides, my 1-lb angle iron ingots stack perfectly in them and they hold about 100 lbs chock full. My idea is don't build loads you can't pick up. If you do, put them on wheels or on pallets for the forklift. If you don't own a forklift, downsize to dolly-type loads. 4-500 lbs is NOT a dolly load, it's a mash-your-a$$-when-it-falls-on-you load. Break it up into smaller parcels.

Used pickup truck toolbox, bolted to a spare bedroom closet, is where I stash most of my lead:

Ok ok maybe that's not "most" of it, but it's "a lot" of it.

Ole, why would you bolt down a box full of lead that is in a closet?

Before I bought my big gun safe, I used to store my (less expensive) rifles in there.

Now it's just a lead and powder vault. :D

Cardboard box under the workbench in the garage, wooden ammo crate on the floor in the basement, and just stacked in a pile out of the way in the garage. Also have 100# of brand new ingots sitting on my tablesaw; gotta find a better place for those. Maybe in a plastic bucket.

Plastic (buckets) die at the most inconvenient of times.

Milk crate on a rolling dolly thingymajigger. Had about 700lbs in there buts its around 500 now. Was going to seperate the alloys (WW's and Range lead) but Harbor Freight was flooded back in May and still hasnt reopened so I still havnt bought another one of those thingymajiggers.

I cut "used" med flat rate cardboard boxes in half,
then put a piece of 1/4" plywood, cut to fit into the bottom.
then stack 50 lbs of ingots in each box.
I have a nearly unlimited supply of 1/4 plywood scrap.
I stack the 50lb boxes about 8 high on my porch (2 stacks so far)

Portable and 500 lbs - Use a 20mm ammo can. Weld or solder a 1/4 inch riser on each end of the bottom. That will raise it up so the tongue of a hand cart will easily slide under it. Slide the tongue under, tip back and roll away. No lifting and will easily hold 500lbs.

I keep my modest stash of lead in wooden mortar shell boxes.
They have rope handles on the ends, and stack nicely.

There is a great sub shop here in downtown Portsmouth, NH called Moe's....legendary, period. They buy their pickles in 5 gallon buckets. When they are done, they sell the buckets (and lids) for $1 each. Buy 10 of them and fill them up with ingots.
You can do 100lbs in one. I fill them about 1/2 to 3/4 full when ready to use so they can be moved. They are stored in the basement and getting them up the stairs into the casting shed is not an easy task at 100lbs. 50 lbs makes it far easier......so I make twice as many trips....that's OK with me. .
Store EVERYTHING in 5 gallon buckets. Brass and ingots are the two best. Problem is that the buckets smell like pickles, even after they are washed and cleaned. It takes a year to get rid of the pickle smell.
I have almost 2000 lbs of ww's and 3-400 or so lbs of ingots in buckets in the basement. Always looking for more.
