There is an 1891 Mauser in the original 7.65 caliber available in town. It has been "sporterized" has Weaver bases, scope safety, and reasonable bolt handle. For some reason, that single stack magazine, and smooth bolt operation has always appealed to me though I've only had a couple over the years. This one is no beauty, but is clean it seems, and the price $100 seems good. I've always had a hankering to do something different with one, maybe a rimmed case like the 25-35 or a 35 remington, or something light, and handy. Any ideas floating around out there, or experience with something like this?

The magazine is set-up for rimless so 25-35 might give you feeding problems. Seems I remember Larry Gibson might have one in 35 Rem.
As the extractor has somewhat limited travel a cartridge smaller than the 35 Rem. might give problems. A couple different cases tried in the bolt might confirm whether they would work or not.
I always thought a 7.62X39 would be nice in a bolt gun. Numrich sold a kit for the '93 and up Mausers, don't know if they still do. I'll have to check that cartridge in the bolt of my '91.

I have 2 of these, an original and a sporter. The sporter consistently shoots 150gr. Hornadys under 2" at 200 yards. Brass is easy to form from 30-06 based cartridges, bullets are readily available and cast shoots well in these.
If the bore is good why not just shoot it as is?

Sounds like it would be a good buy though.

When you're thinking about changing things around, just remember that the Argies were designed around 40,000- 45,000 psi?? The price sounds good to me, but then again, it seems like what was $100 before is now $500.... Gold plated bore maybe???

I converted mine to 250 Savage years ago and it is a great little deer rifle. McGowen of Illinois did the total job back then. BvT

I'd grab it in a second! Try the 7.65 cartridge before you go changing anything. It's a perfect round for deer as is, great with cast, the rifle loves it...why change it?

The price is $100 now. I have no intention of pushing the 91 to high pressures. The .250 Savage is interesting. I always liked that caliber a lot, and have lots of cast boolits that diameter. I like the original caliber too, but don't have much in the way of boolits to fit above 115 grain. Hmm, some of these Argentines had bores as tight as .311 though so that might be worth a look. I do have an adequate (?) number of .308's, and 30-06's though.

As others have pointed out there's nothing wrong with the 7.65 round.

I have the remains of a 91 that I keep thinking would make a 7 x 57 for one of the grand kids.

Heck, for 100 bucks I'd buy it and play with it.

I have one in 7x57 that I bought from a member here. Very nice light carry rifle & shoots cast well.

I have one in 300 savage that takes 788 mags. They definately are a fun gun, snatch it!

For $100.00 I would buy it and get a 338 Fed BBL and have a GREAT gun Easy to load for You will get board trying all the different bullet combos availiable. Could be shot as a QUIET gun or a stomper and take anything from Rabbit to moose. Cast or jacketed. It is on my short list of things to do with the 91 action I have in stock. the action I have is weak and needs a lot of help including an extractor. When I get all the parts a 338 Federal is in my near future. J.Michael
