I have one of these on the way. I was wondering about loads. I'm not planning on shooting max loads just wanting a good load that won't beat it up. Right now one of my favorites is a RCBS 45-270-SAA over 13 grains of HS6. Will I have any problems with this load in the Smith?

I have one as well as a buddy of mine, I've shot quite a bit of these same slugs over 10 grains of Unique, it's a little punishing though in this fairly light gun, although it seems safe, I mostly run this same boolit over 8.5 grains of Unique, it'll shoot deer just fine, is pleasant to shoot and it accurate in both guns.

Thanks for the info. Do you know a velocity of that 8.5 load?

Not out of the mountain gun, out of a 5.5" Bisley Vaquero (older long cylinder model) it goes pretty close to 925 fps, gotta be pretty close to 900 with the mg I'm thinking too. The 10 grain load goes 1050 out of the Bisley.

If you have Power Pistol around 8.5-9 is good.

I think the Smity should be up to that load of 13.0 gr of HS-6. Should get you 1000 to 1100 fps.

Here is a good link for that particular bullet.

The 14,000 loads would all be fine and the 20,000 loads???? should be OK and for the 32,000 loads, I wouldn't go there unless it was a Ruger.

Hope this helps you out.

FWIW, with a 255g cast SWC, 8 ~ 9 grains of Unique is the gold standard.

Velocity is generally 800fps for 8g, 850fps for 8.5g and 900fps for 9g.

Pretty cool, eh?

A 255g SWC @ 900fps is nothing to sneeze at. Penetration at 100 yards is legendary and is documented to pass cleanly through a horse and have enough energy to kill the BG hiding behind it. The U.S. Army demanded it and got what they wanted when they adopted this cartridge.

I load 9g Unique for 900fps and it's accurate, very accurate.

Though my Ruger BisHawk is capable of firing far more powerful loadings, it is difficult to improve upon the fine accuracy and excellent performance the 45 Colt gives with 9.0 grains of Unique and a 250 grain-class boolit. This one works in Colt SAA, S&W 25-series, and spaghetti repros without fuss or bother.

Your HS-6 load with the RCBS 45-270-SAA will be just fine in your S&W 625 Mountain gun. That load gives me about 1000 fps out of my Mtn Gun.

Rob over at Simply Rugged makes excellent holsters. I think you'll be pleased with his work.

Top shelf holsters and Rob is a nice guy to boot. I highly recommend them.
