I am going to be traveling up to Mt Rushmore from Nebraska and spend several days camping in that area and was wondering if anyone can tell me what gun laws I need to be aware of. I want to carry a pistol for protection but would like to find out the laws before I go. Thanks

I've ben going to and through South Dakota since 1981 on hunting trips, until they passed the ccw law it really did not matter how you carried a gun in a vehicle.
Now days when I'm out there, I just keep it under the front seat and don't let anyone know.
It's kinda like your spare tire-outta sight and there when you need it.[smilie=s:

click on the map on your state and it will open a page with another map that shows which other states honor your state's permit and vice versa

+1!

We are heading up that way tonight . . . plan on getting to Custer late tomorrow evening . . . I just checked out all the states I'm going through . . . http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/southdakota.pdf

This is what I gleaned from it:
SD:
Must Inform Officer: NO
The permit is valid throughout South Dakota except in any licensed on-sale malt beverage or alcoholic beverage establishment that derives over one-half of its total income from the sale of malt or alcoholic beverages (SDCL 23-7-8.1)

Carry Allowed in these Areas:

State Parks: YES 1-26-6.10.

State/National Forests: YES 1-26-6.10.

WMA’s: YES 1-26-6.10.

Road Side Rest Areas: YES

I sent ya PM.

We have CCW reciprocity with Arizona at this time...http://www.sdsos.gov/adminservices/concealedpistolpermits.shtm

Our gun laws...http://legis.state.sd.us/statutes/DisplayStatute.aspx?Statute=22-14&Type=Statute

With CCW reciprocity, be sure to carry your permit with you, you would hate to have to come back for Court...
With a CCW, you should be good to go in your car and on your person. No bars or courthouses. If stopped, please have the courtesy to tell LE, even though not required. It can save some stress and embarrassment on both parties.

You can carry it openly in a holster without a CCW, but may stir looks from people unless you are on the open prairie or deep in the Hills. Not a common practice anymore for 100 years...Some State Parks and Nat'l Monuments have there own ideas on where you can carry.

Be very careful in Custer Park on some of those tight turns . I was on my brakes for more than one buffalo. All the resturants sell Bullalo burgers and steaks which I consider quite good. But here in Louisiana we eat crawfish, alligator,Marsh Hen, Nutria and well you get the picture. Was in Rapid City and ordered Grits with my eggs and our waitress asked me "What is a Grit". Also asked for tabasco and they had none. Was asked more than once What did you say?

you'll be right near wyoming also.
you might wanna look at thier gun laws.
their's goes something like this.
officer: you got a gun in there?
you [actually the wife]: uhh no.
officer: wht not? it's probably a good idea to have one.

actual excerpt from conversation between wife and officer when her fan belt broke on highway.
while he and I were on the cell phone.

I have applied for my ccw but won't have it in time for this trip. I am mostly concerned about carrying it with me in my truck and haveing it with me at night in the tent. As far as I can tell when in vehicle needs to be in a locked case?
Thanks
Bryan

Thanks cheese that is what I thought. Just wanted to make sure I was reading it right. Don't think will need it in truck so locked case is no problem. But in tent and hiking is what I was most concerned about.
Anything I should see while I am up there other than the obvious? Never been there and will be there for about 5 days

Thanks again
Bryan

The ongoing Crazy Horse sculpture, Mt. Rushmore, the Needles Highway near Mt. Rushmore. Hill City is a neat little town; they have a dinosaur museum and I think a replica of one found in SD. Keystone is toursity. Custer has the Mammoth Sight; an ongoing dig of mammoths. You can hike up Harney Peak which is the highest point east of the Rockies.
Custer State Park is nice too. Most of this is in the Southern Black Hills. I live in the Northern where we have Spearfish Canyon, beatiful when the leaves change colors- still too early for that.

Spearfish, Custer Park, Mt Rushmore Black Hills all in easy reach if you use Sturgis or that area as a base. Also don't forget Deadwood even though they have made it a little too tourist minded. The ride up and down the canyon road is nice. Saloon #10 where Wid Bill meet his demise. The one now is the same location but originial had a fire in the 20's I think. It can be very warm during day but you will need a coat at night.

Went down to 37 degrees the night before in Deadwood. Then to 85 by the afternoon.

Not ready for winter, but I guess I choose to live here!

We drove up Hwy 85, and pulled off on some little dirt road to see the "real country" we saw this little skipper eating with Momma!

Then drove down through Spearfish Canyon:

Then through Deadwood where it seemed that they were having some Mustang madness going on, plus lots of motorcycles . . . swung into Lead, and headed through Hill City which seemed very touristy . . . stopped in Custer, and stayed at the Bavarian Inn & Restaurant . . . very good food, and slept like a log!

Next morning we head down towards Hot Springs . . . and see:

A nice area to visit!

We are at a cabin in Hill City tonight. Going to head back thru badlands tomorrow. Hit one of those little skippers last night with my pickup. Luckly for me he went under the pickup and didn't do any damage to my truck. But he wasn't so lucky. This is a very beautiful area. I will be back to spend more time here spring. Mt Rushmore was nice to see but everything else here is what makes the trip worthwhile. Really loved Chief Crazy Horse Mem. Hope I will be around to see it finished.
