Hey all;
I shoot a Ruger No.1 in 45-70. I have been using 405 gr. FNL bullets with good accuracy at 100 yds. I recently acquired about 200 530 grain RN cast bullets ..they look terrific. I need some loading data for this bullet. I am using 35. grains 3031 behind the 405 bullet with magnum primers.
Thanks;

There are so many good loads for the 45-70 that only how much recoil you want to deal with is the question. The ruger No 1 is a fairly light rifle in 45-70 and with a 530 gr bullet you will know that it went off. You do not mention what you want the load to do so I will give you a few. 25-30 gr of Accurate Arms 5744 will provide black powder ballistics of around 1050 to 1200 fps. Or you could use the same load as you do with the 400 gr bullet it will just kick harder and go out the muzzle a little slower. If you reall want to make you shoulder soar try putting 50 or so gr of 30-31 in the case and load the 500 grainer. This load will be adequate for anything that exists on this planet with the possible exception of the big four in Africa and I am not sure of that exception.

With bullets that heavy in the 45-70 I like to use something in the burn rate of 4350 or a little slower, as much as I can get into the case with a drop tube. A little more speed than a black powder load, with less recoil and very good accuracy in my Sharps. Using 3031 allows the pressures to spike up higher than I feel good about, though it would be safe in a #1. As mentioned above it'll kick a bit too.

I have used 3031, 4064,Varget, Universal Clays ,H322, Trail Boss ans 4759 witgh 350 g Ranchdog. I like 4759. It doesnt measure well thur my Redding BR 30 measure ,But is a nice laod starting at 23 grains for about 1200 fps. Universal at 12.5 grains at 1188 fps.So depends on what FPS you want and recoil. Since i shoot paper i use 1200 FPS range, H322 is good for hunting loads over 1500FPS

most of the lyman manuals list loads for that boolit! also have a littla paperback book called..." the complete reloading manual for the 45/70 government" . this little manual has tons of info in it and also lists this boolit and loads including black powder loads.

its not good to take somebody elses word on a load...look them up for yourself and start low.

might keep your eyes and face in place someday........just my 2-cents
