on the recoil / gas spring it has the same set up as model A5 browning
which way are they set for buck shot?

All the buck shot loads today are high velocity so you put the friction ring on top of the spring bevel side up and then put the friction piece, (the split ring with the bronze in it) on top of the friction ring. During recoil the barrel ring forces the friction piece down into the friction ring causing the bevel on the friction ring to squeeze the friction piece tighter to the magazine tube slowing down the recoil cycle.

Hope this is the information you're looking for.

And don't use a real slick oil on the magazine tube. The friction ring has to be able to grab the tube.

One of the nice things about the long-recoil designs is you can really soften the recoil by playing with the bushings at the "heavy load" setting and just enough lube on the mag tube to let the action function reliably. I shoot my Browning A5 light twenty in sporting clays and have just enough lube in the mag tube so that shells clear the gun by a couple feet. Shooting buddies tease me for shooting a pogo stick after they try it because they can feel the the spring as the barrel recoils.

that was the problem, rings were backwards.
