hello, I've been using the Lee 250 gr and about 16gr of 4759 in my 1893 marlin and 1894 winchester with o.k results. Someone wants me to load some rounds for his 94 winchester but of course he wants more power to use it hunting. My #39 lyman book shows 18.5 gr max. I loaded some at 17.5 , has anyone used more than 18gr in an older model marlin or winchester ? thanks, Ward.

That all depends on each rifle. I'd stay away from the warmer loads as they are no always the most accurate.

Hi There, Enfield;
I dug out some old records (1999). I used a lot of SR4759. I like it for many Chamberings. I attempted to chronograph all my loads but had a tuff time getting the hang of varying cloud cover, wind blown leafy trees, etc, so much of my data was incomplete. I recorded only that which I was confident in.

I loaded in a range of 17.9gr, to 21.0gr, to find the most accurate "hunting" load for my OLD Win. For 20.5 gr. of SR4759, I show velocity's varying from 1589 to1658 f.p.s. This was using a fairly hard boolet from "Bill's Bullets" in Fla.
A FN,GC. at .381"dia. ans BHN of 19.

These approximated the fine H.S. loads we got from Canada, back when.

I would venture some cautionary advice. Whenever loading for a different rifle, even same make and model, make up a "DUMMY" to check for function AND chambering. Mistakes are best found at the bench rather than on the hunt.
OH! BTW, the cases were R-P and primers Alcan LR. Rem 9 1/2 should do as well.

I use SR4759 in my vintage Winchester Model 1894 38-55 made in 1899. My bullet comes from a mould I had custom made from LBT, so it might give different results in different guns and with different cast bullets. Anyway, here is what I get ....

18 grains SR4759 under a 255 grain LBT cast PB bullet gives 1,362 fps
18.5 grains gives 1,385 fps
19 grains gives 1,438 fps

The 19 grain load is what I used to drop a young Whitetail buck at 75 yards. Complete penetration. I also find that the 19 grain load is the most accurate with a different bevel base bullet (don't know the mould).

SR4759 in my 38-55 336 Cowboy is showing some real promise.

16.5 grains gets 1506 fps (avg) with the Lee 379-250 RF. Very consistent velocity, ES <20 The accuracy starts to degrade some after 15 shots or so - might be the lube not being up to it.

The Ranch Dog TLC 379-235 RF gets 1569 fps (avg) with this load, it is also very consistent over the chronograph and accuracy is very good. 20 grains gets it going 1719 fps (avg) with very good accuracy but prints too high for my sights to use for hunting.

18 grains of 4759 works good. I have used it in 1894 Win with Lyman 375449/375248/Lee 250 gr/Saeco 255/ Paul Jones 38006.

I currently use 4198 in my 38-55's .
