ok guys since we have seen how i screwed up big time missing a 88 in 284, i went and paid my lever gun penance...i bought a 30-30!...a real ranch gun. in and out of scabard since 1965/66 .
there aint much bluing left. no stock finish....but since in the scabard no dings, no rust...just a well used gun...well he said about 10 boxes of factory stuff in those 40 plus years....just broke in!

the price was extremely resonable for a WINCHESTER in shooter grade.

( should i leave it as is or get the local gunsmith school to refinish the whole thing ??)

If, you have access to a smith school, and they are willing to refinish it, I just might let them at it.
It probably won't take that much, and it will be good for them. Let them play with the entire rifle. Stock, iron, have them polish it up. If they do engraveing, let them at it.
They can learn a lot hands on, and it might make a difference for them also.

Is it a pre or post '64? The later 94s have some receiver material that doesn't blue in a hot salts bath.

Regardless, it could cost as much or more as you paid for a rebue/refinish. If you're happy with its "character", then keep it and shoot it as is.

leave it, it has character. The guys are right the post guns receivers will not take bluing but maybe if you want to re do it some other finish might work like some of the bake on finishes.

If you'd like to save a few dollars=311041 and win 748. If ya like to 'spearment disregard the previous statement.

I have a fondness for the older post 64 winchesters-price is usually much better and they still function and shoot as good as any after a little clean-up and a bit of polishin'. I don't know how old ya are but remember for future ref. Williams 5D and firesight front.

From your description, I wouldn't do a thing to it except enjoy.
