300 rum - 06' rail ??

Hello everyone, I have a Savage 116 300 ultra mag, I am thinking about getting a 6mm/06 barrel for it. Other than a bolt head swap, will I have to alter the feed rails on this action. Or just install a ss follower?

I'm guessing it won't work because of the big difference in case diameter. Easy enough to tell, just fill the magazine with .30-'06 dummies and see what happens. I imagine they will fly out all over the place.

Fourarmed, thanks for the quick reply. I had thought about doing that too. I just don't have any 06 cases to try that with currently.
Really just in the thinking stage at the moment.

Halfbreed; by SS follower I assume you mean single shot? If that is what you are talking about doing it will work just fine, swap out bolt head to std size, fit barrel, place the SS follower over original and you are ready to go. Easy to swap back to ultra-mag and have a functional magazine. I believe the SS followers are about 12.00 from Midway and several more co. Scot
