What surplus powder is equal to Win 748? I've read a lot of good things about 748 and would like to try it but I don't like paying $22 per pound.

748 is a high performance powder, meaning lots of deterrent to make 38-40K the minimum pressure after ignition. Perhaps the best burn speed for 170-180 grainers in the 30-30 at 36 grains. Excellent in the 222 as well at 26 grains. Not for 30-06 sized cases, or any case size where less than 90 percent density can be used. ... felix

Yes, H380/H414 speed is a little slower than that of 748. Hopefully, SpecialBall and/or DATA 79 will tolerate lower pressures. I have no experience using any of these with cast, and it is about time someone found out. I am assuming these are a fast lot of WC852, and, if so, they all should work nicely. Data 79 at Powder Valley or Natchez Shooters Supplies ... felix

I looked for DP79 about a month ago... everyone's sold out. Try DP74 at Powder Valley:

Excellent choice for 25-45 grain cases using lead. ... felix

I haven't used much WW-748 with cast boolits, but it's a GREAT powder for full-value j-word loads in 223, 308, and 30-30. I just ordered some WC-844 to get close to WW-748 performance with J-words in 223. WC-844 is the mil-spec powder for the 5.56 x 45 caliber, BTW.

I didn't see the comment on Special Ball earlier. Special Ball from Pat's Reloading is fantastic in the 30-30 with RCBS 30-180FN at 15 BHN. Unfortunately, the last time I talked to Pat, he was down to his last drum and said he was going to keep some for himself.

I don't see Special Ball on his website anymore but give him a call at: 330-833-4360; evenings: 330-832-3843. 32 to 33 grains of this stuff in a 30-30 case sends 190+ grain boolits downrange at 2100 fps with tack-driving accuracy.

Good luck,
MJ

I'm not real sure on this, so you may want to ask others, but...
It was my impression that ball powders were not that safe to use in reduced loads. I seem to remember that elevated pressures may develope. Proper "speeds" of flake or extuded powders are more suitable for reduced loads.

Again, get other sources on this.
