I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I have a Marlin 1895CB and I bought some 420gr GC bullets but, I can't find any load data. I normally use Hogdon powder. I have a 300gr load that I usually use H4198 with. Any suggestions? This'll be a load for some plinking along with whitetail and Maine Black bear hunting.

You might try here: http://www.reloadersnest.com/detail.asp?CaliberID=91&BulletWeight=420&LoadID=8397

Or here: http://www.reloadersnest.com/detail.asp?CaliberID=91&BulletWeight=420&LoadID=9307

Both are for 420 grain GC bullets.

Hope this helps.

I use 28.5 grains 5744 with my 420GC boolits.Low recoil, accurate and works great with PB boolits also.

I am partial to reloader 7. Lots of data out there for it.

RL-7 is my favorite smokeless powder for my Marlin 1895 lever action in .45/70.

Duplex loads will also work well. I use 10%, by weight, of RL-7 under 2f black powder (1½ Swiss works well, also). This will give you about 100 fps more than an equal load of all black powder and will shoot clean all day. Clean up is easy - three or four wet patches with a good black powder solvent followed up with a couple of dry patches. I then leave the bore wet with Ed's Red.

I like a 420 cast with 42grs of 3031. 1512fps and wonderful accuracy. 3 of the elk I've taken can attest to its effectiveness;-)

have had really good luck with Hodgdon Benchmark, clean burning, very accurate and min book load will give you anything you ever need with a 420gr boolit.
Being one of thier extream powders you dont have pressure/accuracy changes from summer to winter.

There are a lot of powders that work well in the 45/70, providing top velocities and good accuracy. Since you mentioned having H-4198 on hand I'd try that first as it has an ideal burning rate for this application. There's plenty of data for it on Hogdon's website where you can choose from loads designed for Trapdoor pressures or for leverguns, depending on how hard you want to push your loads.

The Marlin is a strong rifle and you can push 400gr cast GC pills to around 2000 fps but I think a 7lb rifle is a lot more comfortable to use with loads generating 1600-1800 fps.
