Hi,everyone. This is my first post. I recently bought a 50/95 repo 1876. Does anyone have some smokeless powder loads with cast boolits? I don't need the hot loads that were in the Guns & Ammo magazine. However I would like something something a little faster than the black powder loads.:castmine:I haven't gotten any molds yet, so am open to suggestions. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Cartridges of the World lists:

26gr 4198 with 285gr cast at 1420fps

23gr 4198 with 350gr cast at 1350fps

That case would be a good candidate for AA5744.

With the 1876 action you can not go too hot or you will damage your rifle due to the rather weak toggle link action. 1300 to 1400 fps will be near your top loads for safty sake. AA 5744 would be a good powder for you to use. Call Accurate Arms for loading data for your cartridge.

Good morning and WELCOME Bob !
Great place to start posting....
The first thing to do with that BIG 50 is to find out the actual diameter of the throat are (just in front of the chamber) . That is normally the largest diameter in the barrel and you need to fill that with the boolit if you want any kind of accuracy.
5744 would be a dandy powder to start with. You can call Accurate arms and a Tech feller will advise on a good start load. 5744 ignites readily and does not do crazy pressure spikes in large cases. I use it in 50-70 and have never ad any regrets.

Thanks for the help. As soon as I get all the reloading gear together I'll use all of your suggestions to get me going. Of course the dies are on a 6 week back order. I will keep all of you posted on this project. The 50 caliber hole in the barrel sure is a good attention getter.

At this time I don't have the ability to send photos, Sorry.
Little by little I am gathering reloading equipment for this project. Lots more involved than the
38/56 I loaded for.

Mike Venturino has some information on 50/95 1876s in his excellent book, SHOOTING LEVER ACTION RIFLES OF THE OLD WEST. BUT he is using black powder.

An 1876 isn't a very strong action. Do a lot of research and go slow on the powder charge.
