was at a gun show this weekend and saw/touch /inspected a very nice 88 in 284. when i looked in the bbl it seemed abit rough...so i counter offered the original asking price, the guy said no the $350 price stands.
i walked away to think about it....BIG MISTAKE.

low book is $600, but i was cash shy and hesitated...and lost.
the very next guy bought it.

see even i make mistakes/////lol

You made a BIG mistake. $600 is laughable. Double the $600 and add more....I'm not a fan of the Model 88 because of how the barreled action attaches to the stock, but they do have collector value. The 358 and 284 are the most $$, followed by the 243 and then the far more common 308. A decent 308 will bring $500 easily.

My older brother "conned" me out of an 88 in .308 back in the mid-90`s for $250. Claimed his kid has always wanted one since he had handled one. I guess I must have just fallen off the old turnip truck as I let him have it. I asked him 6 months later about the rifle. I was fed a line about the kid not wanting it now so he sold it to a collector for double and more what he gave me.Robert

My dad has my grandpas Win 88 in 284 in the safe. I worked up a load for it and hunted deer with it a few years ago but never saw one worth shooting. I like it, its a quick handling high power lever gun, if I found one for $350 I dont know if I could get my wallet out fast enough.

That'd bring an easy grand in the NE. Same for the Model 100. Guys love them. Give yourself a big dope slap Mike.

Never under stood the love for the 100 Bret as I had two buddies buy them in 308 in the 70's. Neither gun would shoot even pie plate accuracy.

I had a 100 that would do 3" at 100 consistently using the old Federal red & white box ammo in 150 gr load. On windy days the group got smaller, or was it the other way around?Robert

I don't get it either, same for Weatherbys and AR's. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder, eh?

Two words- gun fit. I had a 100 in 243 that came up almost like a good shotgun. It shot pretty good for what it was 3" groups at 200 yards with Winchester 100gr powerpoints. The only reason I sold the gun was that it went click on a deer, then two days later it went click on the second coyote.

If I could find one that was proven to be dependable, (and affordable), I'd have another.

I have a 1956 M88 in 308 and a 1963 284.

I've been able to get decent accuracy out of them 1.5-1.75MOA, but as mentioned earlier they come up to the shoulder like a shotgun and are pointing where you are looking.

BTW... 284 magazines are worth $60-$100 depending on condition.

I just picked up a post 64 88 for my dad in .308. It is a nice gun and the shop where I found it didnt gouge me either- $550. Very fair. Dad's 100 in .308 was getting lonely in the cabinet..... I would LOVE to keep it as they really do come to the shoulder nicely.

An 88 for $350? Man, that thing must have been a real beater, or you need a beating for passing it up! I saw a couple of 88's at a recent gun show in this area, the "non-collecter grade" (beater) was like $600+, and the nicer guns were priced at $1K++. I am surprised at the number of these I have seen around here, they must have sold quite a few of them.

My Ruger 96/44 is very similar in appearance, I guess Bill Ruger must have liked the 88 also.

I know the feeling Mike, been there, done that! I would love to own an 88 someday, but like I said that only ones I've seen around here are a bit too pricey for my taste, I don't want to own one that bad. Oh well, maybe someday I'll run onto one cheap, I guess that's one reason why I go back to those local gun shows, hoping to find a bargain like that--and grab it!

the first two touching, number three about 3/4" to the right and 4-5 somewheres between the two.
it loved the load i used for my m-14.

Man! That sounds like something I'd do!
Dad's got a 100 .308. Killed my first deer with it.
Mk42gunner's right. It's all about fitting like a quail gun.
Only time I ever bothered to shoot a group with Dad's it went around 1.5"-2.0" with 150 Core-Lokts. Plenty good enough for what it is.
I've never handled an 88. I know only 2 things, an 88 is a 100 with a lever, and, if you find either in .284 or .358 for under 6 bills, you'd better buy it.

Hereabouts, you will lookee long and hard to find a 90% or better mdl.88 in 358 W for $1250..284's(post 64) $200-300 less. I've given up ,and Jesse O. will be making one of my 308's into a 358,as I can get that done with less in the whole rig than a 99 Sav.in 358(in the models I favor) will cost ..Onceabull
