I am currently using the Lee:s 220 mould to feed the cast to my .338 Lapua Magnum.
Has anybody ever tested the old Lyman model 338089 in the bigger .338:s?
Bullet looks nice but would it stabilize in low velocitys when we talk about 12" twist?

I have a single cavity 33889. My alloy is the equivalent of lyman #2 and casts an even 250 gr. as loaded. I size to .339 and lube with Javalina. My load is 40.0 gr. of 3031. Catridge oal is 3.295. My rifle is a Sako Finnbear. It groups about 1"+ to 1.5". Have no idea of the velocity but I suspect it is more than sufficient to smack down Bambi with some authority!

Addendum to my previous post My rifle caliber is a 338 Win. Mag. The range is at 100 Yds.

NEI makes a mold quite similar to the Lyman 338089. It is their #102 mold in dual cavity. The price is still less than Ebay scalpers for the Lyman when you can find one.

The 338 Lapua and the 338 Win Mag. are two different animals when it comes to CB loads. I only speak from experience on the Win Mag which is satisfactory. I would rather have a 338/06.

Yes..
So far I have only used the cast bullets for subsonic loads in the LM.
I have used the bullets without gascheck. Works nicely giving 1-2 moa groups from 100 m.
NEI do have nice models also.. Maybe I should try them.
On the other hand.. I wonder would there be a need for a group buy here?
One good design for all .338 shooters.

If you go to the Vendor Sponsor section, BRP offers some 338 moulds. I haven't tried one of their rifle moulds yet, but a handgun caliber one I got from them was top quality with a quick turn around.

I'd be interested if the weight was around 235 grains and it has a decent meplat for hunting.

The 338089 shoots just fine in a 1 in 10" twist as long as the velocity is held to about 1600 fps or so. Pushing it faster resulted in significant loss of accuracy. A 1 in 12" twist should allow good accuracy at somewhat higher velocities.

As for the 235 grain flat-point hunting bullet, I had Mountain Molds make one for me that I like very much. For details, see:

I have used this bullet to kill a 325# boar. I had it cast pretty hard and it acted like a solid. I think it would have killed more quickly if I had cast it a little softer (say BHN of about 10-12) so it could expand at 1700 fps.

Interesting.
The 338 GEF makes one wonder about the .338 Federal.
I assume that those results are possible to get from it also.
The hollow pointing would boost up the performance..
Best option would be a combination mold with FP, HP and spitzer point incert..
Should not be a problem to manufacture also the spitzer point punch if the design already have a hp configuration..
Or.. maybe a plastic ballistic tip insert to the HP cavity for higher BC for longer ranges?

Glen: Thanks for the link---interesting read. How does the MM 235 FP work in a 338 Winchester Mag though?

Sharpshooter3040 was listing these for sale on the site this Spring, he may still be selling them.Robert

Glen: I am intrigued with that MM 235 FP. With that wide meplat this may possibly be the best cast .338 hunting bullet. Is this your own design, or does MM have "stock" bullet designs? Thanks for the info.

I took kind of a shortcut here..
http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=88900
One of the options to test expecially when it had the hollowpoint option.
I will take a extra set of pins so that I could make a spitzer point for higher BC..
