i am thinking of making a neck sizer die for my 22-30/30 ackley imp. i would like my necks to end up with an O.D. of .245.
my question it should i ream the neck are to .245 or should ream a thousands or two smaller for spring back. i think the neck expander should bring it back to .223 reguardless .

Jim make the neck about .005 smaller, and then size the fired cases without a expander. Measure the inside of the cases, and then lap the die out until the exact diameter is needed for your bullets. No expander is needed, this is the best way to reduce the work hardening of the cases. The toollman.

I bought a few different lengths of CH-4D bushing neck sizer dies, and I make my own bushings for various calibers. They're basically just 1/2" long pieces of .500" dia. rod with a hole bored through and a big chamfer on one side.

See if you can find some 7/8x14 threaded rod. Probably in the MSC catalog. I stumbled on some literally at a machine shop supply house back in new york. Think it comes in 3 foot lengths. A couple or two pieces should last a long time. Frank

...........I made a caseneck sizer for my 40-65 and 38-55 and use the same body, and depth stop. Just made different sizer inserts.

The bottom step is where the insert sits. The depth stop just controls how much of the casemouth/neck gets sized.

Before, to size the caseneck sufficiently you're sizing 3/4 of the case every time with the die backed well out. I think when I make one for the 45-70 and 45-90 I'll use 1" stock (turned down and threaded 7/8-14) so I can keep the insert wall thickness at least 0.100" and have pleanty of meat for the internal threads.

The die body I made from 12L14 as is the depth stop. It simply machines so nice. The insert is 0-1 heat treated as hard as the hubs of hell and left so without tempering. Final polished with 2000 grit carbide paper. I thought an insert might crack in use, but so far both the 40 cal and 38 inserts have each had a couple hundred cases done wthout a whimper. When I make the 45 cal inserts, as an experiment I'm going to make one from W-1 to see how it acts.

You can also find 7/8x14 BOLTS at a good fastener store. I bought a bunch from D-Bolt, in Pittsburgh a while back. They had them in stock at the time, but it's been a while.

What do you shoot your .22-30/30 out of, I have a friend that has a lever rifle in that caliber. Until now he was the only one I ever heard of with that caliber, he loves it but it don't see much use anymore.

i built this rifle in 1975. it is built on a KRAG action turned into a single shot, fited with a douglas 1&1/4 to 1 in. barrel, with a 12x unitrel in a walnut and maple lamatited thumb hole stock made by bishop.
it was and still is a tack driver. i keep the velocity at 3700fps.
