View Full Version : More CAT LITTER uses?

I've seen often mentioned that clay type cat litter can be used over the melt in bottom pour pot, less oxidation and so on.

Few days go I was looking through the pet department in local mart and noticed other type of cat litter; SILICA GEL type. I remember that somebody is using silica gel packets for mold storage purposes, keeping the containers dry etc, so I bought one bag of this stuff. It was similar silica gel as used with electronic appliance boxes, round granules. One other brand was similar, but granules were crushed and uneven. I'm going to try it next winter, I'll put dry and clean cooled mold right after casting to some plastic container and fill the box with this stuff. Easier than collect sg-packets from here and there. I sure hope this works, cuz I don't have a kitty :bigsmyl2: .

Btw, I have seen silica gel used as boot driers bagged in fabric bags to put in the boots. This cat litter stuff makes quite a lot cheaper boot driers, just fill couple of socks with it for easy use. I've understood that silica gel can be dried after use in micro wave or using oven or other heat source. Haven't tried this though.

Reijo, back in the days of "iron men and wooden ships," one of my duties was drying silica gel from the electric sights of our 40 mm guns. We would scatter the silica gel on a shallow pan and bake it at low heat in the galley oven. The silica gel we had was in the form or small, irregular crystals. Either it was blue when dried and pinkish when it had absorbed moisture, or vice versa. that was almost 40 years ago, so I can't be sure! A little heat and the silica gel would magically resume its original color.

I use silajel and yes it does dry. Put it in your oven (scattered shallow in a cookie sheet) @ around 150-175*F. Check it every hour or so until it turns blue. Same method works with desecant. I bake it for about 5 hours @ the same temp in cookie sheets. I've had the same big bag of the stuff for about 5 years and it still works. Someday I may find out how long you can do it that way.

Bill,

I wasn't aware the USS Constitution had 40mm's on her, boy that's interesting. I was aboard a wooden Destroyer, which had torpedo tube, but we didn't have any torpedoes as they weren't invented yet.

Boy we're some old timers Bill, it's good and fun remember our Naval days huh?

Pat, it will soak up the red spot if you shoot the cat in the litterbox.

Joe, guess you never had to run the Degaussing range on that "wooden can."

Oddly our old "wooden can" had quite a thick degaussing line around the hull. We've heard Destroyers called, well Destroyer and Tin Cans, but have you ever heard them called Greyhounds, Bill?

Mm... alright, but at least fully used clay type must be good flux, odors may be not so pleasant, but who cares. This sg type was about $7.50 per gallon, so no instant bankruptcy. I'm not familiar with driers, but I believe these are using silica gel: http://revelsports.com/Dryzone.asp

Geez, don't tell me Finns are into sheep, too! Next thing you know, you will be forming a cartel with the Texans, to control the world's sheep supply.
