It's time. This is our version of the Lyman 452374, probably one of the most accurate .45 boolits ever. 45 2.1 got the exact nose profile from Lyman, all we've really changed is the lube groove to hold a bit more lube. I'll link the thread that we've been talking about this boolit in. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=7084 It's on page two, post 27.

This will be cut to weigh about 230 grains and drop at about .454. Six cavity Lee.

PM me for my address. Price is, as per usual, $59 with a buck going to a mould for our designer (45 2.1) He'll post up a picture as soon as he can.

I'll run this GB for a while to let people get their money together.

I'm not sure we'll get to 25 orders. If not, we will have to make ajustments.

Ditto..............but you know I'm still in. I'll get the money by hook or crook. Just might take a little while. Please do us Group Buy addicts a favor and give this one enough time. I'll scrape up the funds somehow. :)

BTW, a big thanks for running this one, Cat.

Yah, these'll run awhile.

It's a little tough to balence, I want all these moulds now, not later, but my money tree needs time to grow new leaves too!

One also never knows just how long an oppertunitey like this will last. Finding a board that will participate in GBs, someone with the smarts and access to CAD to draw 'em up and some fool that'll volenteer to do all the work! And a company that will participate too! Almost forgot about Lee!

Hey Guys,
I'm new here but not to casting. I'm interested in getting in on this GB but I have concerns about the mold dropping at .454. I'm currenting sizing a Lee .452 diameter RN bullet to .451 with no problem but I'm not sure if I'd be able to run a .454 diameter bullet through my .451 Star sizer without having to use excessive force or ending up with significant deformation of the bullet.

I'm curious to know why a .454 diameter bullet was choosen over a .452 diameter bullet. Like I said, I'm interested in this GB but I need someone to address my concerns.

TIA,
Netherwolf
BTW, Depending on the feedback I get, I'd be interested in a least two of these.

The original Lyman specs called for a 0.454" base band and very slight protion in front of the lube groove. My Lyman 4 cavity casts them like those dimensions and I have absolutely no problem sizing them 0.452". I stayed with the exact Lyman specs except for the lube groove.

i know lyman #2 is 9 lb ww and 1 lb 50-50 . with 10 lb ww how much liontype would you add to get lyman #2 ?

BluesBear
12-19-2006, 04:08 PM
Since it getting more difficult to get good Linotype I would recommend saving it for other uses.

Wheel weights work pretty good as is for most handgun uses anyway.

The other formula for #2 is 5 pounds of wheel weights, 4 pounds of pure lead, and 1 pound of 50/50 solder.

The modern version of #2 is 92% lead, 2% tin and 6% antimony.
Linotype is 84% lead, 4% tin and 12% antimony.
You can't add Linotype to wheel weights and get a #2. Since wheel weights are not pure lead, you would have too much tin and antimony in the mix.

You CAN add Linotype to PURE lead and get a #2 alloy but not to wheelweights.

i guess not ever have been in on a gb it seems like a long time. but our ordering started in sept.06 . i thought my custom barrel was taking a long time. i ordered a nei mold fri. they said it would be here in 2 weeks. last time i ordered from them it was faster than that. yes a 6 cav is $130.00 but is is a much better more durbal better lasting more bullets to pick from mold. i wish we could get a gb lower price on even a stock mold. thanks

Ordering didn't take place until late December '06.

Delivery is (usually) 6-8 weeks, but can be sooner or take longer. Can Lee turn them out faster, yes, will they turn any particular order out faster than another, probably not.

They take their own sweet time and calling them doesn't usually help a lot. While it is a lot of money to us (collectively) it isn't really a drop in the bucket when compared to the numbers Lee deals with every day.

Does it seem like it has been forever and a day for these to get here, yes. But that still doesn't get Lee to move any faster.

Shouldn't be much longer now though (I hope).

My 32 H&R is in for a trigger job and front sight drill so I can use different height sites since it isn't elevation adjustable.

My 10mm is in getting a new barrel fit so I can shoot 40SW thru it too.

My 40SW is getting a refinish and a fresh set of sights and a beavertail blended

My 9mm is waiting on a couple of mag springs and some new grips

... and the 500SW just wears me out to shoot all day long with the 440gr bruisers.

Left with my trusty LW Commander ;)

I know, I need more guns for times like this.

No good news on my end. Still have high hopes. USPS doesn't offer any help. They won't even confirm that they were mailed. See the quote from their web site below. This is what I got when I entered the delivery confirmation number that Catshooter furnished.

"The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on April 9, 2007 to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date. Delivery status information will be provided if / when available. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later."

The local post office said that when (if?) it arrives they will scan it in. If that happens I will probably have it before they notify me by email.

I really do expect it to arrive someday. My biggest worry is that they threw them around so much that they may be damaged. At this point all I can do is wait and keep checking the mail box.

Damn. I know I shouldn't take it personally, but it's hard not to. Did the tracking number help at all?

In the early '80's I paid Walt Melander (of NEI) to make the first .451-310 mould for me. Since it was a custom order I of course had to pay for the cherry. I ended up shorting him $2 in the confusion.

When my mould came, he said I needed to send him $2 more please. I did right away. Three or four months later I got my letter to him, with my check back from the post office. They had a stamp that said "Found in suposedly empty machinery." A stamp! Showed me how often that must happen.

Don't give up hope. Is there a tearful smiley? There should be.

As I posted earlier, when I put the number on the USPS site, this was all I got:

The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on April 9, 2007 to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date. Delivery status information will be provided if / when available. No further information is available for this item

That is copied directly from their site. That same message has been there since I got the number. As I said in a previous post, my main concern, aside from the long wait, is that the molds will be damaged from being in the system so long. It would be my luck it got stuck in a truck and has been back and forth across the country a few times.

I won't say anymore about this before next weekend unless it arrives before then. I will definitely post if it arrives.

Scrounger
04-28-2007, 09:57 PM
That means the shipper filed the electronic data on the shipment, but the PO has NOT received the package from the shipper, AS FAR AS THEY KNOW. Could be they do have it but it was never scanned into the system. They will show up in a few days.

I had a package be late from florida a couple weeks ago, and the USPS site gave me the same message. Nothing, nothing, nothing, and then it just showed up one day.

They launch good, boys! I had very good results with Power Pistol and WW-231 over the weekend. I haven't compared the data to the Lyman boolit yet but will tonight after work. I spect it'll be about the same. Power Pistol sure do make em fly straight.

They fly very nice with 4 gns of BE as well. Shoot as good as my original saco round nose.
Shot as tight at the sgts tatgetmaster load. Look funny, shoot good.
Look kinda like a fat 9mm.

Well folks! I guess I will have to live vicariously thru all those who got this mold and the 429421 mold. Another week has gone by and no molds. I have given up on them. I have imagined everything imaginable, including some postal clerk deciding that bullet molds were evil and destroying them.

It is no one's fault except the US Postal Service. I hope I have better luck with those GB's I've already committed to, but I think I will have to stay out of any future buys until I get over the disappointment of losing these. If these weren't custom molds, I would just go buy another of each. This was once in a lifetime.

Dang John that sucks. 2 group mold buys missing? That sounds like sabotage.

I think yours should be sent UPS. I know Cat probably feels really bad about this.

But you're wrong on the lifetime deal... those buys will run again I guarantee.. :drinks:

****. Yes I do feel badly, very.

But don't worry Pat, UPS can loose stuff just as fast as the USPS.

This is why I don't sell any of the extra moulds I order with each GB until people get theirs.

alamo, PM coming your way.

Hey Catshooter,

No reason you should have to eat the Post Office screwup.
I'll be sending you $5 to help pay for replacing Alamo's missing moulds.
I know it ain't much. I'm sorry I can't do more.

I'll drop it in the mail to you tonight.

That has sparked an idea...

Why don't we start a GB mold insurance account. If all of us contribute a certain amount say in a PayPal acount, it could be used to pay for a few extra molds in the GB's each time.

If something like this comes up, the account pays for the lost molds, and then the guy that had his lost in the mail gets his mold.

If no molds were lost, the Honcho could sell the extra insurance molds to the guys inline for extras, then put that back in the PayPal insurance account... :drinks:

I'd gladly chip in as long as it has nothing to do with those anti-gun a$$holes in PreyPal.
Just talk to dealers that have had their accounts frozen for selling lawful guns and legal gunparts.

Plus five years ago, they screwed my bank account (and me) to the tune of almost $1000.

No need to worry BB.

The PayPal anti gun is an internet rumor and pure bunk. You can even use PayPal as an option with Gunbroker.com for cryn' out loud...

This board's been good to me. I know how the man must feel all this waitin and no mould after all. Cat shouldn't eat it either, he worked this buy to happen. I'm broke but dangit, I got 5 bucks to chip in to see the man get his mould. You guys work out the details on this and how we'll handle it in the future and I'm in. Lemmee know where the check goes.

Folks, just let me say that Catshooter has been more than fair with me in this ordeal. If he wants to post the details of his offer that I accepted, that is OK with me.
Although I think the chances are slim to none, if those molds show up undamaged, I will make sure that Catshooter is not out any $, and any extra $ that may be floating around can go to an insurance kitty if one is set up.

I have a 4 cav Lyman mold which is now a spare, if interested. By the way, just today Lee replaced my 429421 that dropped big boolits so they may still have it, if it would be of use.

How much are you asking for the Lyman?

This has happened now to two of the people that have purchased moulds in one of my GBs.

I've offered the same deal to both: I'll split the cost of the replacement mould(s) with 'em. This is why I won't let go of the extras that I buy for each GB until the smoke clears for the original purchasers. I don't know how else to do it. I don't think insurence is worth the hassel, even if you ever your money.

If some of you guys want to kick in a little dough to help offset this sort of bad luck you sure can. I don't do PayPal, and this board doesn't want anything more to do with these buys as they allready do.

Unless someone has a better idea the only thing I can think of is we pick some poor fool to hold our dough.

I too have gotten a tremendous value from this board. The way I look at these GBs is as a golden oppertunity. Anyone who hangs around the 'net very long sees the blow ups that can happen. They can happen here, too, and if one does this whole GB thing can go away. I don't know of any other board that is doing what we are and so this to me is the chance of a lifetime. Maybe others will do it later, too. Maybe not.

BlueBear & Edward, that's very generous of you to even offer.

BB, I haven't thought up a price so far, wanted to see if it would help out whoever molds were lost.

Sometimes the PO will add delivery confirmation for 50 cents and one time they were able to see where some gun parts wound up that l thought were lost.

I am in for $5.00, how about all the new gb molds sell for $5.00 extra, with the 5 bucks going to the insurance deal. I hate to see molds getting lost, maybe someday they will arrive, who knows. guess I will be trying a lee truncated cone. I was too late getting in on this one. but was hoping for an extra. Has everybody elsa gotten their molds?
I don't do pay pal, can I send a M O somewhere, to Catshooter specifically?

Cat, still no mould. And, don't you feel bad about a thing. You've done great service for the folks here! Hooah? Durn tottin', a big Hooah.

I can understand a post card falling behind a machine that may not get moved for another 36 or 51 years, and when found the postal folks make a media spread about delivering it. But a package the size of a Lee 6-banger? Gotta be kidding me. If someone in the chain lifted it, they should go away forever. For-freakin'-ever. No matter value. They've breached the trust of those they serve.

Now, what can I do from my end?

I'm in the middle of my first GB as a Honcho. I plan on buying some extra molds, but I am for sure going to get delivery confirmation with the Priority shipping. I have shipped hundreds of packages that way, 'cause out of the few times I didn't bother a couple of them got lost. They never seem to lose the D.C. packages. Funny how that works. As for insuring them when shipped, I'm not sure it's worth it, it's not like we can take the money and run out and replace the mould easily.

How many folks didn't get their molds?

I'm thinking of running a group buy for an EXTREMELY similar bullet (basically the Lyman 452374 w/ a bevel base and larger, square-cut lube groove and a little heavier so it turns out at 230grs), and I'd be very happy to help out in this situation by ordering a couple extra molds, if the guys are interested.

We'd have to work out the payment details, but I'm sure that could be done. This would save the hassle of ordering some one-off extras of this older group buy, saving some dough, and the guys who wanted the mold would have one.

My group buy for this bullet will probably wait a little while (a couple months?), since there's probably not a lot of people clamoring for a bullet mold that essentially just had a run, but I promise it's on my want list. (I found this place after the group buy for Catshooter's bullet was closed.) Also, I'm about to launch my first group-buy for another caliber, and I'm too knew to jump in and have multiple buys going.

sundog,

PM me your personal data and I'll give you the confirmation #.

Gentlemen,

Every mould I've ever shipped has been Delivery Confirmation, so it doesn't seem to help. I too have shipped out hundreds of packages that way. Just the way it goes, I guess.

Don't like it though.

Delivery Confirmation doesn't guarantee delivery, but without it ya got nothin'. At least with it you may be able to see where it got lost. I had two packages recently where the recipient said it didn't arrive but the USPS said it did. Turns out the mailman stuck it in the wrong mailbox in the apartment complex, but because of the DC they found it. Every little bit helps.

All is not lost if it went Del Confirm. It took several phone calls but I did get my gun parts back. Just don't waste time with anyone except the higher-ups at the PO.

If there is ever a Delivery Confirmation on my package, I will deal with the counter clerk. In this small town, the postmaster is usually someone who is "not from around here". I trust the ones who do a job and take care of local folks. I can't say our present postmaster is a political (as in USPS politics) appointee, but I know the lower downs as opposed to the higher ups.
