I think we're ready for the .44 Keith, don't you?

PM for my address. Price is $59, with a buck going to a mould for our in-house mad boolit designer, 45 2.1.

We've had a lot of GBs lately and I'm sure some would like a chance to recover moneitarily so I'll keep this one open until intrest wanes, probably a couple or three months.

45 2.1 will post up the drawing just as soon as he can--he is having some computer issues.

These will be Lee 6 cavity moulds and cut to drop at about .433, weight of about 250 grains.

All the usuall rules apply.

Thanks for waiting a bit for this one, I'll send a check for mine.

Finished lubing 500 44 / 200g rf lees this morning. This clears the casting table in prep for the arrival of my 45k gb.

Thanks for doing this one, been waiting on a heavier mold for the 44.

Thanks very kindly. Today l was using a Lyman 4 cavity steel dropping the same boolit and when the left arm started twitching all l could think was "I need a six cavity alum-minium for this job."

Two or three months will give me enough time to stash some extra aside! I just placed a huge 'lead' order this week and wiped out my funds. In this case, my 'lead' order was for 'minis' as I also Wargame and I ordered another 25 armored units for my German Panzer units!

Hello;
I am new the the concept of casting my own bullets, I have been reading these threads for a few weeks and I think I would like one of these Kieth style moulds. Can you inform me as to where I would need to send the check? Heck I do not have anything else for casting.:???:

I have used International Money Orders for group buys from Australia. Seems to work OK, Pay Pal may be easier, I think they charge the reciepient though, you may have to add a bit.

I'm new to this - I assume that Lee sells the 6 cavity mold handles

Any special preferred source or should I just go to MidSouth or one
of the other good suppliers?

MtGun44

I'm curious why the seemingly large size on the as cast diameter, and what
the actual diameter is planned to be.

The post says drop at about .433", which sounds a hair large, but OK.
I normally size to .430, and .429 for one gun. The drawing shows
.434" for the diameter. I'm not sure whether sizing a bullet this
amount (.004 to .005") will cause any problems.

It occurs to me that I generally use 50/50 lead/linotype or wheelweights
and maybe the alloy that the size is based on will be a few thousandsths
different than what I use. I have at least one mold in .357 size that
does poorly when sized more than .002", but that is a lot smaller
bullet, so maybe at .44 cal it isn't as much of an issue.

Any education on this process from the experts on the site would
be appreciated.

Bill

Catshooter
11-05-2006, 05:24 PM
Mtgun44,

No expert here. But from what I've seen, undersize is by far the most common problem. Or, maybe it's the oversize bores!

It is also true that generally the larger bullets fare better with a bit more sizing than smaller ones.

But, if you happen to have tight bores then woo hoo for you. I have some, they are Ishapur Enfields. Run .299 x .307.

I figure you can't have too many moulds, but maybe I'm wrong, been there before.

Went to run lead tonight and there was NOT 429421 mold to be found. I was so smug that I had that Lyman mold and could run ball almost as fast with a 4 banger as a 6 cavity Lee once I got all of that iron warmed up. That would be true if the 4 cavity was there. The mold I thought was my 429421 is some Saeco that I don't even think is mine. Can NOT remember buying a Saeco like that (funny thing it throws a piece of RNFP lead much like the recent 44 molds that were ordered here this year, just one crimp groove).
Now the question is, WHO has my Lyman?????

I have to get on this Lee order just in case it never comes home. Not a happy thought.

All that to say Hey Catshooter a check is enroute tomorrow from 37179.

Thanks Cat,

The Wheelgun is a 4" Smith 24-3 I bought a few years ago from a great guy. Its wearing refinished Fitz Cherrywood grips; these fit my hands like nothing else and the combination does real well.

The M92 is an EMF, from Steve Young ( www.stevesgunz.com ) in east Texas. He took a 20" 44-40 short rifle, tuned & shortened it to 16" and chambered it in .44 Special. The ballistics are pretty similar, and I already had reloading equipment for Specials, but not 44-40s. The tang sight is from him too and helps my old eyes with the sight picture. The wood has been refinished with Tru oil. This Lever is really handy & hasn't had a bit of trouble with a few hundred rounds through it. More accurate than I am.

If I can setup a good Keith load for both of these, then I'll be happy. Also plan to try the heavy .44 boolit mold, we'll see how that works out.

Very nice combination John,

The 16" short rifle is a perfect choice for 44 special, quick handling with an aperture sight for fast target acquisition and plenty of power to get the job done at short range as well as being comfortable to shoot.

I'm jealous,

We could make it for sure if we waited another couple or three months, but I doubt to many want to wait that long.

Besides, man, do you know how much work 60+ moulds are? I'd burst into tears at 100! Where's that smiley with his tounge stickin out . . .

You think you're being patient? I have been doing this Keith/Group Buy thing for over a year now. Imagine how I feel when I get home from work and no, there aren't a bunch of big Lee boxes waiting for me again!

It is the downside to these moulds, seriously. If I had the money, I'd've just gone and bought about 500 various moulds from Lee and been done with it all. *Sigh*

Even though I live only 50 miles or so from Bill Gates, you'd be surprised just how little money I get from him! He's got plenty!

Gentlemen,

They are here. They look great. However, they are fat. I pulled two moulds and cast up some samples. With the alloy I have in my pot the largest measured .437. That is exactly the max that Lee promises, we asked for .434 max. My alloy is about 50/50 pure lead/ WW.

I wish they had come in a bit smaller, but they are absolutely gorgeous!

If by chance there are some moulds that cast over the .437 mark, you'll have to deal with Lee direct, as always.

I'll get 'em packaged up this week and they'll go into the mail early next week. After a month I'll PM those on my list for any extras.

Gentlemen,

Both the .45s and the .44s, with one exception are packed and ready to be picked up by the post office Monday. Took me until 7:30 last night to get it done. Along about 5pm is when I start questioning my sanity to willingly do such a thing, but then the first session at the casting pot makes it all worthwhile.

I had one buyer that I could not get the post office to accept his address. Steve, you didn't include either your phone # or your user name, so I have no way of reaching you. Your last name starts with A, you live in Kansas and you have a brother who also buys from me. Thanks Catshooter. I got mine yesterday. I cast up about 150 bullets. They cast 257gr with 50/50 ww and range lead. Measured .437 at the fattest part and .435 at the skinniest. They sized up fine at .431 and lubed with White Label Lube. I loaded them over 16.0gr Lil'Gun and a large pistol magnum primer. I crimped in the crimp groove. Resting on bags I shot one ragged hole at 50ft (indoor range limit) off of bags. Gun is a 9 1/2 inch barrel Ruger Super Redhawk with a Burris 2-6x scope. I got very minor leading about 1/4 inch past the forcing cone and that's it. I suspect the bullets were running about 1100fps but that's just an informed guess. I am ecstatic with the bullets.

This is the first "Keith" mold I have ever had. For some reason it is very hard to open after filling it up. I also had to beat the heck out of the handle bolt to get the bullets to drop. I am talking 10-20 good whacks. I am very happy with the bullets and hope the mold will break in some.

Just thought you guys might like to know how it went.

bmblong,

I received my mold also and cast some. I didn't do anything but clean it with a toothbrush using soap and water. The boolits dropped out of the mold pretty well. No problems opening it either. I like to cut the sprue right after the final hold changes color so it is still somewhat soft. Make sure you lube the alignment pins, which I didn't do yet as I only cast 60 or so boolits.

I lubed the alignment pins. The blocks look misaligned when it is closed. The cavities are not, just the blocks. I have to yank the handles a couple of times to open the blocks sometimes. None of my other six cavity molds do this. I cleaned mine with a toothbrush and carb cleaner. Makes great bullets though.

Mine was fidgety to open and close too but by putting uneven pressure on each handle it freed them up. I think I'll sand the pins down a bit, and dropping larger than the Lyman, I may go to a .431 sizer. But once things got rolling I cast 20 lbs in about 30 minutes and that makes a big difference.

Thanks Cat and 45 2.1.

Catshooter

Don't sand the pins!

Not for a first try, anyway.

The pins are a drive fit in the blocks and it sounds like one or both are protruding just a tiny bit too much. With a small hammer, tap gently (gently) on the pin or pins that seem to stick. If you drive it in too far, just drive it back the other way.

This may help, it has helped me before on three or four moulds.

Glad you guys like 'em. I wish the .44s were just a tiny bit smaller, but then my .44 is a .430 and I bet if I had one at .434 I'd like it just fine. The way 45 2.1 designs 'em though they can take a good bit of sizing.

bmblong,

Nice report, thank you. One downside (there always seems to be one, doesn't there?) to the Keith design is they are often tough to get out of the mould.

Smoking the cavities or using NEI mould prep is what I do and it can help. Also, when I open the mould I snap it open fast, that can help too.

Hope these help.

I have found with LEE 6 cavity moulds that it helps to hold the far end up and let the sprue cutter hang down for easier closing. If you hold the mould horizontal the weight of the cutter pulls on the right half and makes alignment more difficult. As for difficult opening, it seems to get better with use, but you have to lube the alignment pins, preferably with Bull Plate Lube.

Cast 500 this past saturday, shot some Sunday over 7.3 of trailboss in my 4.3/8 SB. Five flew into 3/4 of an inch at 20 yds offhand, very nice.
Why 20 yds, well it was just almost dark we were runnin quals and waiting for dark for nightfire so this was a timekiller after dinner.

BluesBear,

Thanks for posting the link, I should have thought of that, too.

2 out of 3 groups were excellent from a pistol that had been pretty
mediocre up until now. Yes, I am happy, much more testing to do,
also happy time.:-D

Received the 2nd mold today - Thanks Cat.

Also had a chance to shoot some that I cast last weekend.

Tried the 9 gr Unique MtGun44 used - ok but nothing to write home about.

Now 9.5 gr, Star Line brass & CCI primer - out of a 629 Mountain Gun (4 in barrel of course) kept a 10X10 steel plate dancing at 110 yards - Not all hits but a high percentage, have to adjust the sites and the number of hits will go up!

CAT:

Both of mine arrived Friday. Thanks for the efforts ! This is the one I have been waiting for ! :) :)

They drop various alloys with a gentle tap. Mine are all abut 0.437". I wish they were 0.434" but they seem to size to 0.431" okay. Linotype requires two steps and care though.

Jerry,

I see you got your moulds, I'm glad. Did you just now get the .357 Keiths?:)

You are a shinning example of a patient man. I think after the first six months I would have complained to the honcho?:) That's a lot of shipping time.

OOPS !

The perfect example why you should never type a response after sucking down a large dose of NyQuil ! :) :)

How about that 452423 ??? ;) ;)

I got my moulds the other day.
I have to say the experience was a little ruff, being that I am in a different country reguarding money exchainging hands but Castshoter handled things as they should be.
Thanks for putting this together.
