Recently I have realized I can neck size my 30 cal. rifle rounds (308, 30-06, 30-30, 7.62X54R) with my 32 H&R carbide die. Also the 35 cals (358, 35x30-30) with the 357 mag die. I use the RCBS universal decap die to remove primers, then these pistol dies to resize. It works great, is fast and doesn't need any lube. Just make sure to stop before you set the shoulder back.

How do you control runout with nothing to capture the case?

Gabby, I understand your question but nothing actually captures a tapered rifle case in a FL die until it's nearly fully inserted.

I do all of my neck sizing with Lee's collet neck dies. They do insure straighter necks, on average, than convention neck dies.

I use a 25ACP carbide die to neck size 25-20's. It is a Lee die and I installed a decapping pin from a Lee universal decapping die so I can decap at the same time as neck sizing.

1hole, the Redding Competition Bushing Style Neck Sizing Die will do that.

back in olden times, when getting ready for the palma matches a cuople of dillon presses were used, and as i recalll( an artilcle in american rifleman) a 32 auto pistol die was used to neck size the cases.

You are correct of course, so does Lee's excellant and much less costly neck die. Should have said "no conventional neck die" provides case capture.

I have used both and for the price the LEE is hard to beat but for the convenience of being able to change the bushing size on the Redding for different neck tension is hard to beat. The LEE you would have to change the center mandrill and would be a special order item from LEE where you could just buy the Redding bushings in .001" increments and be used in different length calibers like 30-30 Win to a 300 magnum.

I will be the first to agree that straight and consistant ammo in a straight chamber in a straight barrel is important If you are seeking bench rest competition accuracy. If that is not your goal traditional reloading dies and tools will produce MOA ammo with either condom or alloy bullets. Most of us are shooting mil-surp rifles or over the counter sporting rifles whose accuracy potential is well within the limits of less than bench rest reloading.

I only say this because of the many new folks and potential loaders that watch this site. I dont want them to think it requires sophisticated and high end tools to "get er done". It doesn't!

I like they way you think. Too many of us get stuck in the "this is the only way this will work" mindset. Thanks for the info...

Chargar's advice concerning actual accuracy potential for mil-surp and over-counter firearms and retaining simplicity as well as economics is prudent, indeed. Any 2-Die rifle set or a Lee 3-Die set which includes a factory crimp die should suffice all but the bench rest snipers.
