I am currently loading the 190 RD boolit in my 1:12 Whelen, but if I have it seated out far enough to touch the lands, it is barely in the brass. It will feed through the magazine and gets fair ( < 2" ) accuracy at 100 yd. and 1900 fps but the load seems awfully fragile for a hunting cartridge. If I seat much deeper then accuracy suffers.

My question- is there a boolit 250g or larger which has a reputation for accuracy in the Whelen? I'm too blame cheap to start buying molds totally by the eeny-minie-mynie-moe method.
Thanks

ive got the rcbs 35-200-fn.

its for my .35rem, but supposed to be a good boolit.

I've never hunted with it but I have good luck in my .35 Whelen with the Lyman 358318 245gr. GCRN boolit. I dont have my ledger handy but it grouped well for me.

Milkman, in a word, yes. 358009. My version of it (by David Mos), with gas check, is 1.095 in length.

I like the 358009 or the 220gr RCBS 35 clone, or the RCBS 35 200gr boolit.

The saeco #352 is also a good one.

i shoot an NEI 282 in my Remington 35 Whelen with a 1-16 and it shots 1.5" or a bit under most of the time.it has shot many inch groups, but not enough to say its an MOA combination.i use 4227,5744,or 4759 and aim for about 1600- 1700 fps for my best accuracy while keeping recoil manageable for fun shooting.I have shot the bullet @2000 fps and it shot well.

I use the Lyman 358009 in my 1:12 twist Rem 700;and use the RCBS 35-200 in my 1:16 twist Rem 700. Both give MOM (minute of moose) accuracy. (less than 2" @100 yds). Powders used are AA4064 and the 358009, and 4759 with the RCBS 35-200. Velocities are 2150 and 1760 respectively.

Thanks for all the replies, I have been away from the computer- Dang those honey-do's
DamronG - that sounds like the boy what could do the job. I will check that one out for sure.
Lots of interest in the 358009 too. I don't recall seeing that one before but definately looks good.

thanks again

Try NEI's 358-268-GC-DD (#167) for an accurate bullet in the .35 Whelen. The .001" DD ring engages the rifling when the cartridge is chambered and prevents tilting. It shoots 1 MOA or less consistently in my 700 Classic.

Slug your chamber. Learn what you need as a minimum weight to fill the throat. Learn what you would like to have. And then design your own.

I have a few j-word bullets I am trying to shoot up in my Ruger 77MkII. I am wanting to come up with one of the 358318-245 gr. Dean D. spoke of. If anyone has one they don't need I'd like to hear from them. That NEI 358-268-GC-DD sounds like a good one as well.
