For a job like that id recomend Dave Clements. He does excellent work and his prices are reasonable. Unlike most pistol smiths he will take on small jobs. Most like bowen and the linebaughs prefer to do full blown custom pistols. You cant go wrong with clements, either of the linebaughs, Bowen, Alan harton, or ben forkin. Ive had work done by all of these and wouldnt recomend them if i hadnt.

This guy makes all the corrections needed to factory guns to get them to the precision level they should be. He also seems to have an eye for all the neat conversions I'd like to have (like a 5" non-full-lug S&W629, and a 4" Mountain Gun barrelled S&W 696), and he's very well regarded among other custom gunsmiths. Not exactly inexpensive, though. Name is Jim Stroh. Company is Alpha Precision.

Not too hard to do yourself, but when I wanted a pro to do it to my 475 BFR, I went with Clements

One thing I learned the hard way. Some will quote you a delivery time and then will miss it by a considerable time.
I had some work done by a WELL know pistolsmith that quoted me a month on a small job ,and I mean small, and it was 5 months before I got it.
Just be aware that some are excellent pistolsmiths but stink as a business person.
Try to leave yourself some options in case the man has time issues.

This kinda goes along with the PPC revolver thing. I know there are a few other good pistolsmiths out there for Bullseye, PPC, and ICORE. Looking for a good smith at reasonable rates, Adam.

I went with Dave Clements when I wanted similar work done on one of my Freedom Arms and couldn't be happier.

You would be hard pressed to find a better gunsmith than Jim Stroh. He is one of the least pulicized in the business, but is recognized by his peers as one of the best...American Pistolsmith of the Year awhile back. I had the privilege of meeting him two years ago...after almost 20 years of him working his artistry on my pistols. AND personally, he is a true gentleman. I can't say enough good things about him....and all of them true.

It is a Bisley hammer that I reshaped. Simply take the Bisley hammer and the original hammer and slide them on the pivot pin side by side. Then scribe the shape of the hammer skirt of the original hammer on the Bisley, swap them around and repeat for the other side. Then grind away close to the line and finish with a file and some emery cloth, then polish.

Good smith's listed above for sure. I would like to throw one more name out and that is Jack Huntington at 530-268-6877

John does custom work by that I mean he builds them the way the customer wants them, not packages and his top end work is excellent

Here are a coulpe of examples

Some good smiths listed for sure but some of them are priced pretty well up there. Not a problem if you've got the dough and especially if doing a 5-shot conversion, etc. On the other hand be prepared to drop $400-500 to get your barrel shortened and new sight from many of them. Just maybe the best name in the business is not necessary for every job.

That is a bit expensive just to shorten a barrel. WOW
