I have a Remington 700 VS in 308 Win with factory 1-12 twist barrel. I haven't shot any cast bullets in it, but want to change that. I've read some 308 threads, but still have a basic question:

For those who DO shoot a 308 Winchester with a 1-12 twist with cast bullets, if you had to start all over again, and based on your findings, what would be your first selection for a cast bullet mold?

I am interested in shooting in postal CB matches at 100 yards, and would like to see how accuracy is out to 200 yards (but 100 yard range is primary use). If you can toss in a powder/load with your findings, I'd appreciate that too.

Thank you in advance.

(P.S.: I'm looking for real results and findings based on usage, not responses like "Every rifle is different, and you just have to find the one it likes best." I know that. I've been shooting for a while. It makes it easier to know what people have had actual success with. I do know what the classic molds are-311291, 311041, rcbs 180 etc). I'm not looking to do any rechambering or long-necking. I'm curious about the SAECO tapered bullet, but I'm not sure how to best lube/size it in my SAECO lubrisizer. I'd consider shooting a bullet design with some lube grooves exposed from the bench.)

I am using the SAECO #315 175gr TCGC in my Remington 40X with 1:12 twist with 20.5 grs of AA5744 for 1752 fps with Bullshops NASA lube and my record group is .305" for 5 shots at 100 yards. I just posted a article in equipment about the die modifications that I did. I was shooting this load at 300 yards yesterday and had no problem hitting broken pieces of clay pigeon.

Might need to try that same load in a 30-30, especially a bolt gun. Curious what the extra twist would do in a 788 (10), with a more commensurate case capacity. ... felix

Catboat, I have a 700 VS LH. Great rifle. My best cast load so far has been the RCBS 30-180-SP over 5744.

Ben,

When you state your SAECO 315 is sized to .3105", is that the measurement on the bottom band? What percentage of your tapered bullet is in contact with the sizing die? Is it a push through sizing die (ie Lyman, SAECO) where the base enters first, or a hand held sizer like a Lyman 310, that keeps the wider base entering last?

Doc Highwall, thanks for the modification info.

Ben that penny not covering your flyer shot is it, looks like a good group. Hope I can get the same out my Ruger I'm getting in a couple weeks. The Ruger has the trigger swapped for a set Canjar and has been bedded by my smith, his Cast gun been locked up for 35 years. Plenty of scope choices probably my Leupold 6.5x20. No Saeco mold in 30 cal but 10 Ideal/Lyman molds to work with, something will work always does. Will start with 311 41.

Like Sundog I have a Remington 700 VS LH in .308. I started with the RCBS 165 Sil and have used many other bullets. Finding a good bullet for this rifle is no big trick, but if I was starting over, I would start again with the RCBS 165 Sil.

On a good day with good light, no wind and I got a good night's sleep and have not had too much coffee nor an agrument with the spouse. That rifle will produce sub-MOA ten shot groups with that bullet as well as several others. I really have no keep the kind of stastical records that would prove the very best bullet, but I suspect the RCBS bullet would be as good as any. Beside the short body fits inside the the shot .308 case neck.

I also have a Savage 16 bolt gun, and two Winchester 88 leverguns in .308 and they all do well with cast bullets. IIRC the Savage has a 1-10 twist and the two Winnies have 1-12.

Not as good as the big boys but will this help?

catboat, the SAECO #315 is a tapered bullet and only the bottom band is sized at .3105". I cast mine out of indoor 22Lr range lead that I alloy at 30:1 so it is soft enough to engrave the lands with out pushing the bullet back into the case when chambered.

catboat :

To answer your question..........The bottom band only that is .0005 " larger than my .3105 " sizing die is the only portion of my bullets that receive any sizing at all.

I push my bullets ( nose 1st ) through a Lee Push thru die that has been honed out to .3105.

I then lube my bullets ( lube only - NO SIZING at this point ) in a Lyman 45 with a .311 dia. H & I sizing die. Not the fastest, .......but I'm not about speed, .......I'm about accuracy.

Here are the specs on my # 315 :

I'm shooting a Savage 99 and have found in limiited testing 2 that outperform others. They are both Lyman, 311466 (Loverin style) and the old style 311644 ( has the nose lube rings). I have just prepaired some cases to load for my next range outing and will be futher testing the 466 along with another design that shoots wonderfully in my .300.

For me it's the 311467 and 19 to22 grs. 5744. My Rem. 308 SPS Varmint loves that combination.
