Howdy,

I recently acquired a Springfield 1903 Mark 1 for a very fair price. It appears to have been arsenal refinished at one point, with Remington 1903a3 parts and a really spectacular 2-groove barrel. The receiver has quite a bit of pitting, as does the trigger assembly. None of the pitting appears to be more than 15-25% deep.

I have not owned a surplus rifle with this amount of pitting before, so I am ignorant to how much is too much as far as safety is concerned.

I'll try and post pics later tonight. Thanks for the help. :drinks:

I'd say that it would depend on where it's at. One of my Krag rifles was very rusty at one time. especially at the rear of the receiver. Someone prior to my owning the rifle had cleaned the rust off very good, both off the receiver and bolt. That left things fitting very loosely, but putting a bolt in that hadn't been rusted tightened things up a bit, enough that it's the rifle going to Camp Perry with me Fri.

15-25% of what deep?

I was thinking he meant .015- .025 deep.

I concur with Dutchman's analysis in that thread.
