View Full Version : Can someone with Quickload run some #'s for me?

Here's my partial recipe:
I am shooting a 340 gr Lee with my .45-70. Pressures should not exceed 29,000 CUP
I want to use Win 748 powder.
748 seems to follow IMR 3031 fairly closely, but I would get some reassurance of my interpolations if Quickload gave me results similar to what I have "divined"

So, if ya got Quickload, and can run the #'s with those parameters, it would be much appreciated.

We'll need a seating depth & barrel length to get any meaningful numbers, but in a side by side comparison Win 748 is a little less bulky, and produce slightly lower pressure than IMR 3031.

For a boolit length=.877" and a COL=2.55"; 57 grain of 748 will get you 1914 fps at 27.6K PSI. This results in a 94% load density and an 83% burn. Personally, I'd rather have a more complete burn... you may experience wide ES's with this load. Are you going to use a wad with this load? That's a pretty high velocity for this boolit. Dropping back 5 grains (to a 86% density load) gives you 1720 fps but your only getting a 76% burn at 20.7K PSI.

Thank you for the info, Marlin Junky.
I didn't realize some of the data quickload took into consideration.
For the record, it is:
Boolit length=.850
COAL=2.630" the chamber leade is long in the Sharps replica I have, and I am seated out to touch the rifling with the boolit. I would need to shorten it up to 2.550 to use in my 1895G
Barrel length in the Sharps is 28" from breech.

I'm not familiar with the term "burn" Does that mean the relative efficiency of the powder charge, i.e. how much is used by barrel's end vs. how much is available?

Will the longer barrel of the Sharps give a better burn? More time before boolit leaves muzzle?

And I agree, there is no good reason to push the 340 gr pill at near 2000 FPS
1500 FPS is enough for my purposes. I chose 748 as it is in my powder locker, is spherical not extruded, and I wanted something slower than the 2400 and IMR 4227 I had tried.

Yes

Probably

You're better off saving the 748 for other applications and investing in some 4759 or the better (and more expensive) 5744.

To bring closure to this, Marlinjunky, you were absolutely right. I wanted to try some of the load to see how it worked.
Every shot left a barrel littered with 748.
Good thing I only loaded 20.
