View Full Version : Rebarreling a M77

I want to rebarrel an M77 in .358 Winchester to a small bore (with a long neck for cast boolits) and to make things simple, I was hoping the action rails and follower are configured so the 6mm Remington or .257 Roberts will feed well. If there's a problem with this action (configured for the minimal taper of the .308 Winchester family of cartridges) adapting to the 6mm/.257Bob, I need to find, or create, a suitable wildcat... something like a .243 Long Neck (.243W with its shoulder shoved back somewhat).

Thanks for your help,
MJ

Considering how many here would like to have a .358 Win, I would suggest you ask for rifle trades! To re-barrel what is probably the finest cast boolit chambering would be sacrilege!

+1 on Waksupi.

Better yet keep the 358 and just save up and by a 77 "bob". Of course 77 bobs are rare. Buy a 243 and have it rechambered and rerifled to 257AI. more case capacity, same neck length.

you will not be allowed in heaven if you re barrel an original m77 tang safety 358 with sights.:kidding:

The cartridge may be a fine cast boolit cartridge but it's not sacrilege if the rifle won't out perform a 60 year old 336A in .35 Remington. ;-)

Nah, it's a stainless Hawkeye with a plastic stock.

So how much do you figure you'll get for the stainless 358 Ruger barrel one you get it out?

I dunno, perhaps I'll trade it straight across for a .308W barrel off a similar gun (blued is OK).

My old stainless is my favorite deer rifle in '06 (of course). Like above, I would keep my shooter and pick up another in the caliber I wanted.

Welcome to the board Frank.
Sounds like a fine shooting rifle. Those BLRs sure are beautiful.
