View Full Version : Differences in Remingtom primer types

I've always used CCI 500, WSP and Remington 5-1/2 primers for most of my pistol loads. During the recent primer shortage I picked up 1k of 1-1/2 primers. I checked the Remington site and the Hodgdon site and couldn't find any info on the differences between the two so I thought I'd ask the question here. What is the difference between the two? Is one a "magnum" vs a "standard" primer? Is the difference one of sensitivity, i.e. thicker cups?

Any help would be appreciated, including any previous posts/threads covering this. I did a search on previous threads and the only thing I was able to find was a couple of comments comparing various primers that indicated that the 1-1/2 were relatively "soft". I noticed that my Lyman Reloading Book (45th ed) has a lot of loads listed using these so I don't think it will be any problem working up a load for the pistol calibers I load for but I'm still curious.

Thanks!

The Reming 1 1/2 is a small pistol primer. The Remington 5 1/2 is their small pistol magnum

Kmag, thanks for the info. I just looked at both cartons of Remington primers and nowhere does it say "magnum" or "standard". CCI clearly marks their 500 and 550 boxes and Winchester boxes say "standard or magnum".

After I posted last night I thought I'd overlooked something and I'd have to call Bill Engvall and get one of those "signs"!

Thanks, I'll add it to the rest of my collection. They usually arrive shortly after the popping noise that comes from my palm hitting my forehead!

REmingtons primer number system is crazy anyway.

1-1/2=SP
2-1/2=LP
5-1/2=SPM
6-1/2=SR
7-1/2=SRBR

9=1/2=LR
9-1/2M=LRM

I guess Reming don't male a LPM at all. I always used CCI or Winchester for magnum large pistols , now I know why.

Thanks Stew, I didn't think to check a vendor site. You'd think they would put in on the boxes or their own website.

Yeah, you'd think. Apparently Remington didn't. Fortunately, we have other references. The Remington web site doesn't differentiate between standard and Magnum. They just list the numbers. ?????
