.458 win. Mag

I have a Whitworth express rifle in .458 that I would like to load cast bullets for, It does have fixed express sights and I don't want to mount a scope. any advice would be appreciated cause I am a first cousin to a flat smooth rock.

Lyman mould 462560 was made just for the 458 Win Mag, follow the Lyman Cast bullet directions for the 458 and all will be well.
Fun stuff and MUCH cheaper than factory bullets

I use the Lee 500gr mold. It seems to work pretty well.

Is it effective on Prairie Dogs? Or do they just grab the nose and ride it to its destination?

I'm also shooting the Lee 500 gr Gc at about 1900 fps. Havn't tried full house loads yet with lead. I shoot the hornady 500 j-bullet with 79 gr. h335, at 2206. I'm shooting a .458 Lott

I have a 458 Winnie I built from a low cost 300 Win Mag Stevens 200. I changed the barrel, spent about 15-20 minutes working on the mag and I was ready just in case Arizona gets invaded by angry elephants. BS aside it is just a range toy for me. I found a smoking deal I couldn't resist on a Shaw 458 Win mag barrel kit and put it together for no particular reason other than "I want one". I use Lee molds, tumble lube and load using 45/70 data. The first thing I noticed casting the 500 gr slugs was how fast the pot emptied.

When I do bring the 458 to the range with factory or serious max loads with jacketed bullets. I shoot it last. After shooting it with hot loads I flinch so bad afterward I can't enjoy shooting it with mild cast loads. My cast loads using 45/70 data for 2400, 3031 and I believe RL-7 is pleasant to shoot and the tumble lubed unsized Lee boolits are remarkably accurate on paper out to 100 yards. I have also got some decent groups through the irons at 200 yards using Kentucky hold over.

The only suggestion I can make is to keep your practice loads mild. Even with mild loads you will definitely know you shot it. Hot loads will nearly beat you to death and you will quickly lose the fun factor. If you're going to shoot it with hot loads bring plenty of Advil!!

I use 3031 in most of my loads in most weights. Also in the 458 Lott. Have also used SR4759and Trail Boss for some lighter loads.
