Definitely the remains of a m/1894 Swedish Mauser carbine. The original stock has been chopped and sanded. Handguard is gone.

It would drop into a 1896 stock but you wouldn't be gaining anything at all. The handguard wouldn't fit because the 1896 rear sight base is twice as long as the carbine. There just wouldn't be any point to it.

A stock and handguard plus the front sight protector, whether it be the 94 type or the bayonet mount which is the 94-14, would cost $350+ when you could find one. Demand is very high to restore these sporters. It is hardly ever worth the money as the carbine will never be "matching" and "correct". But some guys like a challenge. I prefer my challenges in life come from women:).

Wish there was something positive I could offer you.

Actually, there is something positive to say..

This short little dude would make a really nice mountain carbine with the addition of a lightweight scope and sling swivels. You might have to forge the bolt handle and add a new safety that would clear the scope but there aren't many other rifles suitable as this one is right now for that application. You sure wouldn't be hurting it any more than it has been already. I saw one that had a section of buttstock skeletonized to further reduce weight.
