I've been asked about some of the work I've done to some of my moulds. So I took a pic here:

All these are Lyman moulds.

Top left is a 429215 that I milled the top of the mould until the gas check disapeared. The resulting boolit weighs 185 out of half wheel weights half pure. I wanted a lighter boolit for a Charter Arms .44 Bulldog, which I don't even own! It's a sickness I tell ya.

Top right is my copy of the 462560. Big dang boolit, cast out at 530 grains or so. Was a checked mould. I liked the meplat (flat on the nose) but had no need for a check so I did the same thing to it that I did to the 429215. Boolits cast of 50/50 ( wheel weights/pure lead) come out right at 500 grains. Nice.

Lower right is a 358156. Originally a checked mould. I was looking for a mould for an ancient .38 S&W with a bore of .361, throats of .362 and about 140 grains. I prefer a Keith style usually. This mould cast pure lead at .363! I could hardly beleive it. So I milled of the top of the mould 'till the check was gone. Happy boy!

The lower left is a 457124, very old Ideal design for the .45-70. It's nice, but I do like a flat on a boolit and of course this mould was a round nose. So I drilled it out and made a plug that is held in with a single screw. The boolit cast out of (of course) 50/50 weighs about 15 grains less than it used to, 385.

All this work was done on Sherline(.com) equipment by the by. Not all that tough to do, I'm not a machinist I'm an electrician.

Hope this is of some interest and answers your questions Boom Boom! :)

Have you stayed at a Holiday Inn Express recently? :-)

Nice work! I like the idea of getting rid of GCs as I find no reason for them in pistols.

The nose change with the plug is particularly innovative, too.

Bill, you can even use the plug trick to make nifty stackable wadcutters... http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh83/dubber123/IMG_0112.jpg

Thanks, Cat. I just had my 462560 HP'd by Eric. I left the GC, and they weigh just a tic under 520 out of 50/50. I'll try and get a pic on soon.

HP'd by Erik, a Lyman 462560. http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh83/dubber123/uncle005.jpg http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh83/dubber123/uncle008.jpg Cast from 50/50 WW-Pb, these weigh about 520 grains.

Nice lookin' boolit. How deep is that cavity?

It stops about 3/16" from the front drive band. It feeds slick in a Marlin lever.

Holy **** guys, now I NEED to buy a milling machine. I saw this thread yesterday and I've been thinking ever since. I am about to get a mold for my .380 and I'm not finding exactly what I want. I can use the nose plug method that's pictured here to modify a Lee 125 grain RN mold so that it will weigh less and have a flat nose, like the bullet that buffalo bore loads in their .380. Instead of drilling a hole through the plug, I would machine a counterbored slot. This way I can keep making the hole for the plug deeper until I get the proper weight boolit. Now I just need a way to justify to my wife why I need a $5,000 machine to make a $20 mold work like a $70 mold. Any ideas how to pull this off? :bigsmyl2:

I use both a Sherline lathe and mill. Way less than five grand.

Can't help ya with yer wife though, sorry bud. :)
