Went to the nearest big city yesterday, stopped in at a favorite gunshop to ask a couple questions. Mission accomplished, looked on the used junk rack and saw a small orange Ideal/Lyman box. Picked it up, looked inside and found a brand new, never cast single cavity 311241. Absolutely beautiful, it is stamped 150 gr.. All my references state that it is commonly referred to as 308241, listed in Ideal/Lyman manuals 22 thru 45. Has anyone used this design, does it drop .308 or the labeled .311?
It is a plain base round nose, box says 30-30.

Lyman molds typically are intended to drop at their first three digits, but this varies
with alloy and from particular example to particular example.

You want about .311 or .310 for most US "thirty cal" barrels. Best is to slug your barrel
and use at least .002 over for rifles in my experience. You should have good results with
this design, depending on fit to your barrel and the speed you drive it. Looks kinda like
a non-GC 311291 which is a known good mold design.

This is an older Lyman design that was quite popular decades ago and unfortunately is not in production for some time now. It came in 2 sizes...311 and an undersized version of .309. It never had provision for a gas check so pushing it much over 1600fps may not yield the best results. It can carry a fair amount of lube so can probably do a decent job at short and medium+ ranges. Finding one in such good shape/unused is unusual. Best of luck with it. LLS

Great find!!! The 311241 makes a great plinking boolit. The one I have casts at 313. I size it down to .311 What I find works the best in my 308 is up to 7 gr of Unique out to about 75 yds. Over 7 gr and groups at 50yds go from 3/4" to over 4". Loads that give me 3/4" groups at 50yds are over 3" at 100yds.

My Lyman chart lists the 311 241 as a RN PB in either 125 or 155 grain sizes. As mentioned, it should make a great plinking boolit, or maybe reasonable range vermin getter.

Have fun!:drinks:

Good find. mine casts @ 160 grains and .311. I've only shot it a little, but plan to develop a 30-30 long rifle type (1100 fps) load for it eventually. Not for oversized Marlins but is better for the M-94 where grooves are typically tighter.

I have a really nice 99 Savage carbine from 1936 in 30-30 that should be a nice platform for the 311241. Thanks for the opinions.

I have 5 of them from a single,4 cavity and also a 7 cavity Armory mold.I have both the 125 and 150 versions, undersized, with and without crimp groove.,and that range from .297 to .301 noses and bodies that go from .309 to .315.i haven't found the undersized noses a detriment to accuracy as i don't shoot the bullet above 1250 fps. For the most part each design shoots well when its size is fitted to a particular chamber..In the 30-30. 5.0 to 6.0 of Bulls Eye shoots good and the 30-06 and 7,62 x 54, 308Win and 303 BR like 7.0-8.0 of BE.If all is going well you can occasionally shoot MOA with this modest little RN bullet in a good bolt gun

This is a bullet Lyman should still be making.
