How did I do?
I realize once rust is there it won't be the same; But what the heck! I bought it from a friend here at a very decent price for something to tinker with. Gave me quality time in the garage. I haven't tried casting with it at this point, and may never use it in my 1911...but may work great for glue-its this winter!

Three days of soaking in brake fluid with TLC rubbing with #0000 steel wool on a daily basis...

..............Why wouldn't you try it in your 1911? I mean, assuming it's the right size?

Wow! I'm impressed! Will stow this away in my bag of tricks...

Nice little boolit - many old-timers used it for 25 yard shooting. Should cast around 185 grains.

Don't hesitate to try it. One of my best moulds was a rust bucket. Still casts great boolits.

Well, I may tinker with it in my 1911, but my main 45 mold is the Lee 228-TC in a six banger.
Of course I'll still cast a few and see what she does, one doesn't know until one tries!

Cheese1566:

That is just about as terrible of a job as I've ever seen; it's just aweful. You had better rid yourself of that mold ASAP. I can send you my address and I'll pay for the shipping. Once it gets here I'll make sure it makes way to the local scrap yard out by my casting pot. :bigsmyl2:

Great work...........does it have any pitting left over from the rusting or was it not in as bad of condition as the original picture looked?

Thanks!
The minor pitting from the deep rust in the cavities is luckily located in the drive bands and grease grooves. Hopefully they won't bind and release cleanly. I figure any deformities in the cast bullet will be smoothed out in the sizing process anyways.

Cheese,
Nice job, for sure. I'd shoot them, too.

It looks pretty good to me, cheese. Give it a try, chase the vents to clean them out if necessary. If they hang up, lap the cavities lightly (see the Lee-menting threads). I've rehabbed several molds almost that bad and they work well.

Great job refurbing that mold. I cast that bullet and use it in my Auto Rim cases and sometimes I cast and lube it for use with Black Powder and load them in my .45 Schofield cases for use in my SAA Clones for Cowboy Action Matches. It shoots really well in either application.

They feed well in the 1911A1 as well and shoot tight groups, but I prefer to use that design in my revolvers.

Boolit designed for 1911. It feeds well as it was designed to. I load it backwards in revolvers for a full wadcutter.

I shot a lot of that bullet when I shot Bullseye. Out of my wad gun 10 shots would make a ragged 1.5" hole at 25 yds out of the Ransom rest with 3.7 of BE. I used it for the timed and rapid stages at 25 yds for the lighter recoil and shot the 200 gr 452460 at 50 yds for slow fire. As long as it will feed it's an excellent bullet.

Cheese,

Nice to see you gave that old lyman the TLC it deserves and a mighty fine job of it. I use 3.5 grains of Bullseye under that same bullet in my 1911 for fun shooting and the 452460 for a little more. The star will lube either without reajusting.

Whilst lurking and reading here,

I see that some of you like the 452389 boolit.

What loadings and OAL are you using for proper feed in an issue M1911?

Seems too short , I am stovepiping these with 5.5gns herco at 725fps according to my chrono. Sized 451, lubed 50/50.

I loaded mine the same as the SWC's with just enough shoulder out of the case so that the back of my case is even with the barrel hood.
