What kind of recoil pads are you using for your 1895 Marlin 45/70? I have read up on Limbsaver but they do not specify the sizes for a Marlin unless I missed it somewhere. I have read the Pachmyer decelerator is also a good pad. My Marlin kicks the heck out of me when I am shooting a 405 Lee HB cast out of it using 51grns of 3031, it is the most accurate load that I have found for the HB and I hate to download it since this will be my main load for elk and deer when I take out my 95". Thanks in advance !

I am using the Limbsaver. It works well.

Not sure on the size though.

I took my 1895, a field pad 1", and made it fit.
I refinished my buttstock after that, then did the forearm.
I could then fire my 1895 all day long.
Made a big difference.

Mine is fitted with a Pachmyer Decelerator pad, which works well. When shooting at game, you don't even feel it go off, but off the bench, any heavy loaded .45-70 in a light rifle is going to let you know something is going on when you pull the trigger....

Hope this helps.

The Pachmyer decelerator is a big help on recoil reduction. I have also added a mercury tube to mine and it makes a HUGE difference.

Mine has the Pachmyer Decellerator as well. I had it put on a couple of years ago, when the original Marlin "pad" hardened up from old age--or maybe it was my shoulder that got older.

I just got the med premium limbsaver slip on, it works on my Marlin 1894, and on my Rem 700 270, works great, you won't be sorry!

I have the limbsaver. It makes a huge difference but I took it off and went back to the factory pad. The limbsaver is just enough thicker that it makes the length or pull too long for me to shoot with much clothing on.
I have just learned to slowly work up over a period of a couple months to heavier loads if they are deemed necessary.

Just put on a medium slip on Limbsaver recoil pad and went through 50 rds in my 45/70. Shoulder is no sorer than if I shot that many rounds through my .270..great product..thanks for all the replies and advice !

Kick-EEZE in Sorbothane absorbes a whole bunch of recoil energy.

I will second the Kick Eze I fit a magnum 1 3/8" thick on my Marlin 45-70 XLR.

It was bruising my shoulder with the factory decelerator.

Brother Bskejr have you sat in the East yet.

Be a Man and shoot it with the factory pad. Assuming you have a guide gun it should have the thin rubber pad. My cowboy model is lighter and has a hard plastic plate, talk about painful with a hard load. The Lever Evolution rounds are ridiculously painful.

on the other hand the slip on works great if the length doesn't mess with you.

Limbsaver makes a prefit pad for the 1895 - I got one. Just unscrew the factory pad and screw on the Limbsaver. Now I can shoot the big 405's all day. Made a huge difference. Look on the limbsaver website for model number. Midway has them cheaper.

I recently restocked a recent manufacture Marlin in 444 !

This rifle is just for 400 grain cast bullets pushed as hard as I can stand .

So when I had the gun restocked I had them put a nice THICK KickEeze on the rifle !

I was shooting some 400 grainers in it last week with no ill effects .

I am now thinking about restocking a Marlin 1895 with the same type monte carlo stock and another THICK KickEeze to help me with the Ballisti Cast 550 grain bullets I plan on shooting in it !

I shot a number og hot loaded cast bullets in the hard rubber plated 1895CB I had and you knew it everytime !

I now have a pair of the 1895's that were made from 1972 to 1979 with the semi curved hard rubber buttplate . They can hurt you at the bench working up heavy loads but aren't so bad hunting when you only take a shot or two . I do however have a slip on Decelrator pad for use on these two rifles [smilie=w:

Like you said I always thought the 1895G had plenty pad , but the standard 1895 could use a bit more with heavy loads for bench work .
