View Full Version : Before and After Krag

I have been on hiatus with the reloading while making a new stock for my Krag. The stock it wore until now probably started life as a Stoeger but it was thin in the wrist and broke in a fall. Too bad indeed as it is beautiful wood.

The new one is English Walnut and it has features of a few of the 1900-1930 gunsmiths. It has 1/4 inch cast-off in the heel and 1/2 inch in the toe. It points like a shotgun. The wood needs one more hit of finish and I still need to finish and chase the checkering. I have not touched the metal yet and I am fabricating a barrel band fore end attachment/sling swivel combination, as well as a correct screw for the attachment of the Redfield sight. I am currently using a Springfield Swivel screw to hold it in place.

I am always my worst critic but I am happy with the overall outcome even if it isn't perfect in some of the smaller aspects.

The bore is perfect and shoots cast beautifully.

Beautiful work. A nice gun isn't any harder to carry than a plain one. That one should be a joy to hunt with.

Beautiful!

When you get a minute I would like one like that, but with the cheekpiece on the "correct" side.

There was a beautiful left-handed Krag in these parts a couple years ago. I almost bought it on looks alone. It was very brown walnut, which, combined with other aspects led me to believe that it was a post-WW2 job. Had it been earlier I probably would have grabbed it.

Throwback,
The Krag is breath-taking, very nice. Did you do the checkering? I am contemplating trying to checker a stock myself.

Thanks for sharing, Malcolm

I did all of the work. The checkering has a little R. G. Owen, Seymour Griffin, and Harvey Rogers influence. The stock dimensions are Wundhamer but there is no palm swell.
