Don't know about a rifle, but I was presented a 30 yard shot at a cow elk with my Super Black Hawk. i wasn't hunting elk, had a cow tag and was carrying the 44 for coyotes or what ever while looking for several head of cattle that hadn't come in. Loaded with 240 gr. SWC @ 1050/1100 FPS, certainly not a game load but it worked, only one day left in the season so I took the shot. Worked well, I was lucky and it never even hit a bone, just took the heart out.

21 grains of H110 behind a Ranch Dog TLC-432-265-RF seems to work well out a '94 Win.
Or 19 grains H110 behind a LEE C-430-310RF. WW alloy-air cooled

Obviously it will kill Elk. A lot depends on the territory that you are hunting. Heavy timber I might practice a quick reload or shooting with 2 cartridges in between the fingers of the left hand. If they are out across clearcuts or open parks you will have to do a lot of backtrack stalking or wishing that you could get over there.
