I found a 1 lb bar marked 60/40 in my father in-laws garage. I know it stands for tin and lead. is it 60% tin or 60% lead?

I'm thinking 60 lead - 40 tin. Either way, go find some more...... Mike

Yeah it's 60% lead. I've also run into 70/30 which is what the old time body shops used to fix fenders, etc. on Model A's and such when auto body repair was a craft... long before the introduction of metal fillers.

Tin content always is first number.

Perhaps I have it backwards but my 70/30 solder appears to have a greater portion of lead than tin. It is very soft and has a dark gray coating of oxidation.

Yes, tin content is usually listed first in tin/lead solder ratios.

THAT'S why I prefer to get 50/50..... ;) no more confusion..... My local metal guy does it tin first, but the easy wat to find out is to ask which costs more......
Dan
Yep it's 60% tin 40% lead, kind of the standard in soldering electronic components, and wiring........steg
