Your .45 Keiths have arrived! Let me tell you, they are gorgeous!

I pulled two out and fired up the pot. Here is what I got.

A tap on the hinge pin and out they fell.

First mould.

.4556
.456
.455
.4553
.4556
.455

Second.

.4553
.4542
.4536
.4539
.4539
.4547

My pot was pretty hot, and the mix is mostly WW. The boolits were still almost too hot to measure, but I couldn't wait!

Weighed one -- 256.6 gr.

I should be able to get them mailed out by Tuesday or so.

Remember, any issues your idividual mould might have must be worked out between you and Lee. But I tell ya, the two I pulled out are great!!! They are just exactly what we wanted.

All the .45 Keith moulds have been mailed. Everyone that sent me money has had their mould(s) sent.

I think you'll find them all to be excellent, and if you do, it's due to 45 2.1s drawing. He has done so many of these with Lee that he knows how to communicate what we want to them, and then they can and do deliver. We owe him a large thanks.

Unfortunatley, there are no extras at this time.

I expect will do another run of these later on.

Enjoy!

Mine got here on Friday. I immediately fired up the pot and poured me a bunch.
Went to the range with two different loads. #1 was 6.5 grains of RED DOT
and #2 was the classic 18.5 grains of 2400. #1 gave nice round groups at 25 yards, and left the barrel of my blackhawk at 850fps.
#2 gave great groups(for me) and left the 5.5" barrel of my blackhawk at 1050fps.
The coolest part of this is the fact that both loads shoot to the same point. I have one load for plinking and hunting small game, and I'll use the other for defense and big game hunting. I reckon I'll have to take this bullet out after antelope in 2 weeks. I'll let you know how it does.

Casted a bunch , then sized to .453 , lubed a 100 or so last night .
Loaded 50 tonight with 7 gr of Unique in 45 Colt cases and tryed them on a steel gong at 50 yds .
Ended with a 2"- 3" gray spot from all 50 .
Either I am getting to be a better shot [smilie=1: Or ( more likely) that bullet shoots as well as it looks

AMEN BROTHER!
I knew I had a keeper after I broke a clay pigeon sitting on the 100 yard berm with my third shot from my blackhawk. Granted, there's been some work done to this gun, but DAAAAANNNGGGG! This puppy shoots! Oh, the load for that shot was 9 grains of Unique. I switched to 18.5 grains of 2400 because it burns cleaner. I have a heck of a time getting the belt Mtn basepin out of my gun after a few cylinders full of Unique loads. That stuff is just DIRTY.

Got mine today and fired up the pot. they just fell out with a shake of the handles. first time I've ever had that happen. only had to tap a very few out. they look great.

been looking for original thread. one that shows dimensions. was it deleted to protect the drawings/design? anyway just wondering what the target diameter was. .455? mine have been dropping on average .457. Don't get me wrong, I ain't complaining. I can almost shoot them in my 45/70, which would be good.

thanks, looks definitely like a keeper.

The spec'd diameter was 0.455". There were no posted full dimensioned drawings BECAUSE one of our board members seems to think that anything posted is public domain and he can use it if he wants. We do have a copyright statement on this site, but it is of little practical use since that board member violated copyright on a drawing before with no censure, therefore no fully dimensioned drawings are going to be posted again. You can ask what various dimensions are though.

Got my moulds yesterday and after a quick cleaning fired up the pot this morning. 50/50 ww+lino produced BEAUTIFUL bullets from .453-.456" (90 degrees from the parting line) . The average weight from 12 cavities (2 moulds) is @ 248 grains.

I am very happy I bought the two since I am not use to aluminum moulds. By running two I can get a pretty good rhythm going to keep the mould temperature about right. When I used only one I got a heavy bullet frosting.

Even though I hand cast I produced a mountain of bullets in nothing flat !

These are great moulds and I look forward to the remaining Keith series.

Thanks again to Cat and 45 2.1 for their work on all of these ! :)

I am already in for 2 each of the .357 and .429 GB's !

I hope I don't look back in a few weeks and regret not getting a pair... :???:

I just wrapped up a casting session and tried out the 45 Keith.

It is just what we wanted. :-D My mix of 50-50 WW/PB cast at 850* yielded an average weight of 257.6gr and the diameters ran from .4545 to .4560. It makes a fine looking boolit and shooting results should follow.

Guys, you came up with a winner! As a hardcore Elmer fan, I am both envious and jealous. I have a few old Ideal single cavities and a double cavity. Plus a Lyman 4-holer of 70's vintage in the 454424. You guys hit the nail on the head from the photos I've seen compared to Elmer's original. Someone did their homework and research ! GREAT JOB !!!! I'll have to be on the lookout for the next run.

AND... details? :Fire:

Cast up a bunch with very little sorting. Once everything was hot enough they were dropping 454-455 (WW+1.5% tin), all of the cavities dropped freely. Sized to .452 in RCBS lube-matic using the RCBS lube that came with the sizer.

Loaded up 100 in 45 ACP cases over 9.5 gr HS-6. Seat them to near the top of the middle driving band (crimp goove exposed). This load runs right at 1000fps for me with other 255 SWC in the ACP brass. Shot them in a Freedom Arms M97 revolver, 5 1/2" bbl.

Went to a nearby gravel pit to shoot centerfire rifles at extended ranges today rather than to our regular, developed range, so didn't get a chance to do much formal testing with the handgun.

Turned a standard paper plate into a sieve at 85 yards (sitting position).

Plinked away at a 1 gallon milk jug at 220 yards for a while . Placed it high up on the side of a large, loose gravel bank where you could spot all of the hits. Never did hit the jug but they all (30 shots or so) stayed in about a 2' wide by 4' tall oval, which is pretty good for me at that distance using a revolver with open sights. Was trying to get at least one hit by the law of averages, but no such luck. Had a hard time judging hold over. Need to put some of those horizontal white bars on the face of the front sight blade.

Going to take a 5 gallon bucket along to shoot at next time I try 200+ yards with a handgun. ;-) Going to have to do some smelting first as all of the 5 gallon buckets I have on hand are currently filled with wheelweights.

followup comment/question

I used a 424 top punch when sizing this bullet and it left a slight ring on the nose of most of the slugs. A cosmetic rather than functional problem.

If anyone has a better top punch recommendation for this nose profile (i.e. wider flat nose than 424), I'd like to hear about it.

On my second casting I noticed if the mold was at a 45 angle when I tapped them out it would create a slight bend on the bottom of the boolit. What's a good way to make for smooth drops? Seems like someone mentioned coating it with something beforehand.

Dang it...I cant beleive I missed this. Ive got a 4 hole Lyman but the 6 holer would be great.

Be sure to put out another call one of these days, I'll definatley get in it. Ive been using 10 grains of AA#5 with it in my Colt Ananconda and it is the most accurate load Ive worked up for it.

I made up a flat punch, with about a 3/8 inch maximum diameter. The part that goes up in the press is 1/4 " then I went to 3/8 about an 1/8 inch thick. It works well for all of the Keith type bullets and leaves no mark at all.Best of all... its easy to make...took about 5 minutes.

I loaded up 50 rounds to try out yesterday. My sizing die has not arrived, so I used Lee frog snot on as cast diameter boolits (.4555) My go to load for the 45LC is 8.0gr of Unique with Federal #150 primers. It shoots rather well in my SAA and these trial loads were no exception. 1 3/4" groups at 25 yds off sandbags took little effort and if you are wondering about the use of Lee Liquid Alox, I can report no leading whatsoever after 40 rounds. I'm curious to see if the use of lube in the groove will make a difference in accuracy, but that test will have to come later.
