A question.
How does the .45 Schofield compare with either a long colt, or ACP?
I am just wondering.
I plan on loading mine with Pyrodex P.
I am getting too old for the Boomers.
I used to One hand a .44mag. way back when.

In US Army service in 1873 -1890s, identical loads, different cases only. In civilian
loads, depends on when you mean. The Army used the short cases in everything
for a while due to need to fit two pistols. Scho ammo worked in the SAA, SAA ammo
not in the Scho, so while both were in active use, shorter Scho ammo was std. This is the
origin of the "Long Colt" appelation, which some do not understand and say "there
was never a Short Colt, so why this name?"

The 40 gr .45 LC BP loads run about 1000 fps from the 7.5" SAAs, Duke V. reports.
Serious load. He also reports that this was not a load used by govt in their pistols,
but (IIRC) in some later civilian loads. He has proof in form of a gov't arsenal original
box of ammo that says something like 35 gr or 30 gr, I forget.

I would estimate that the Schoefield and SAA in 1880s would be around 850 fps and the
.45 ACP ball is the same. Diff would be about 20 gr heavier boolits in the Sch and SAA.
Basically the Army wanted to get back to the SAA effectiveness when they spec'd the .45 ACP,
so not surprising that it is very close.

So, the Schofield is about like the ACP.
That works for me. I like less than thunder pistols.
Thanks for the history, it helps.
I have fired some hot LC loads in my day. Fun, and even more fun to hand it back to the original owner.
Thanks.
Brass should last a while, that is good also.
