I've been wondering how any of you out there inside expand your 9mm cases to hold a .357-.358" boolit? I've used a .38 Sp inside expansion die, but cannot get a flare to the case mouth on account of having to run the die so deep in the case. Leaves a nasty bulge that may or may not chamber. Anyone make fat 9mm inside expander balls?
TIA,

A 9 mm Makarov is plenty fat, you may have to turn a couple of thousandth's off .

I'd suggest contacting the mould's manufacturer. Lee seems pretty accommodating to selling things like that. Don't know about the others.

I'll try that 9mm Makarov...thanks. I thought about calling RCBS, but wanted to see if there was another trick or two floating around. Thanks again gents

Normal Dillon dies in 550B. No problems ever.

Lyman "M" Die for 9MM, order a .357 expander for it.

I use a set of 38 S&W dies to load 9MM with a .358 cast bullet for my 9MM cylinder in my Ruger BH convertible.

Thanks all for the ideas. I've a Lyman "M" die and RCBS. The RCBS is the one that is too long for the 9MM cases. I'll take a shot with the Lyman as soon as the temps get below 100*.

Guesser, I grew up in Great Falls. You anywhere near there?

Take the expander stem out of your 38 Special die and put in your 9MM die?

That way you would not have to try to get that small case so far up in the die to expand it?/

Just Thinking. (I know trouble waiting to happen)

Does this work? Has anyone done this?

I asked the question to Lee and here is their response "You could also use a 38/357 expander plug, but since there is a difference in case length there will also be a difference in the length of the expander plug. The 38/357 will be shorter, and will require some kind of spacer."

I found it strange that a 9mm expander is longer than a .357 expander.

This involves another die step, but I used a semi-progressive--so no big deal.

I expanded first, using the 38 Special expander spud, then used the slightly smaller 9mm expander spud to only flare the case mouth. The 38 spud need not go very deep into the 9mm case to do what was needed. (Version 1.0)

Present method (V. 2.0)--buy a set of Lyman Multi-Charge expander spuds. The 9mm (#9AP) spud mics @ .3545", which works well with my .357" boolits. It saves a die step for me, too--I can both expand and flare case mouths with an M-die spud profile (FAR superior to the RCBS flare-only) and pour powder through the same die. For sake of comparison, this set's 38/357 spud mics @ .3565".

Lyman dies are a lot more lead-friendly than are RCBS dies, excepting the RCBS Cowboy die sets. I still prefer the above-mentioned M-die spud profile. If you want a custom-diameter M-die spud made up, give Buckshot a PM. I prefer his spuds to Lyman's.

But then look at my signature

I have RCBS 357 and 9MM dies and the 9MM die is way shorter than the 357. works in mine. If your using Lee's then I guess they would know.

The die expands but does not flare so 9.3X62AL is right another die step.

Not much you can't do if you put your mind to it. Now if I could find a die that would take 32 ACP down to the correct size for my cast Boolits......

I have Lee 9mm dies, and RCBS and Lyman .38/.357 dies, so swapping the expander plugs doesn't work. Mebbe if I can shorten the .38 ex.plug so it doesn't go so deep into the 9mm case that may work.
