Hi all,
I know nothing much about swaging, normally just cast, lube/size and shoot. But i am interested in the Swage process in the search for a more consistent bullet.
Silly question time:

1/ When you swage a bullet do you have to put a jacket on it?
2/ How do the grease grooves come about? (i pan lube)
3/ Is there factory shapes of dies to suit factory cast bullet moulds?
(i shoot the RCBS #82014 180gr. FP in 308)

Thanks in advance to all!!!

Silly question time:No such thing :-)

No, but .......................

2/ How do the grease grooves come about? (i pan lube)

...............that's the rub. Unless you're mildly 'BUMPING' a boolit, there won't BE any lube grooves. Swaging basically is pressure forming a solid into another shape. However there are things you can do to a GG slug. As below:

You can swage in HB's or HP's.

Or you can alter their shape to a degree.

You'd have to have a swage die custom cut for the design. I'm not aware of any swage dies mimicing any current cast boolit designs.

LEFT: Generally however with lead you're swaging these,
RIGHT: To make these. In the left photo if you look closely at the 2 boolits in the center you'll see a faint 'step' showing up as a line? They've been run up into a .374" nose size die so they could be seated out further for 2 reasons. Mainly since they're for the 38-55 it'd allow more black powder in the cases, and secondly the longer engraving surface would allow better alignment of the round to the bore.

Naturally the idea didn't stike me until AFTER I'd already made the swage die  or it could have been accomplished in one die. Oh well!

Thanks in advance to all!!!

Great sight here. certainly lots of info on all you could possibly need to know. Buckshot certainly has a lot of experience and makes some great looking bullets. If your are interested in making jacketed bullets there is certainly a lot of info here that will be very helpfull. I certainly try to post all I can on the subject.

I find the 40 cal JHP from a 9mm case to be about the easiest bullet for me to make. Here is a link. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=70121

I see your from down under. Is there any dificulty getting excess brass to use for projects like this?

BTSniper,
Brass is pretty easy to get.
I dont wish to make jacketed bullets, i like the idea of shooting grease grooved lead down my Mauser barrel. I am only looking for a way to improve on as cast bullets, trying to get a bit more consistency with them. (size, weight, shape etc...)
