View Full Version : How many Boolits do you keep on hand?

Every now and again I get the urge to cast boolits. Not just a few, but a lot and quite often. And this year has been a good year.

I have been casting almost every morning for about 5 months and now have on hand about 13 -14 thousand boolits of different calibers and weights.

Is this too many to have on hand or should I have a keep on casting until I get out of my system?

If you enjoy it and have a place to store them go for it. I just cast as needed. I try to keep about 500 or so of each caliber on hand at a time

I certainly couldn't criticize you for it. I still have bullets out there that I cast 3 years ago. Although when winter gets here I'll be casting more of them.

Keep on casting. When you run out of lead melt them down and start over ...Ray

I try to keep 5000-6000 completed rounds on hand. For me thats a years shooting. I try to keep 2000 loaded in each of my three calibers. 10mm, 38, 44.

So at any given time I can have 2000-6000 cast bullets laying around awaiting loading.

I went downstairs and snapped a quick photo currently I have 2574 cast bullets, I did notice I have no .38s cast. So I may cast a few up today. :lovebooli

I like to keep one to two thousand of my most common boolits on hand. IE.. 45-185-SWCBB H&G #68's, 38S-145-SWCBB, 38S-158-SWCBB, 09-125-SWCBB H&G.

If I get low on ammo, I can set up and load at least a thousand to re stock. Currently have eight thousand under the loading bench ready to go. Cases are cleaned with powder and primers aplenty. :castmine:[smilie=w:[smilie=w::redneck:

I have Cast for 47 years. My habit when I get a new mold is to Cast at least 500, if it is a pistol mold I will cast until a new mold comes in. I don't size all I Cast until I need them. I have 32 molds now. I use cigar boxes, plastic boxes, and wood boxes to store them. I Cast for all major rifle calibers from 22 to .338 and 38, 44, and 45 pistol.

A minimum of a couple thousand of each caliber that I load for.

I must be behind the times. I only have 500 .44 bullets cast right now and 2500 .38. I do have 3500 38s that I bought before I started casting. Once they are gone I will only shoot my boolits.

I am convinced that at some point, unfortunately, boolits will be currency.

I currently have two hat box's one full of 45 auto boolits the other with 9mm round count would be 1800 and 2400 each.

These are several years old and represent my back up stash should the unlikely event happen that I could no longer cast.

Everything else I try to keep a couple hundred on hand at anyone time but some times ya run out.

My recent experience with that was when I offered a new site member some 358429 HP's to try out.

Went into the garage and realized I had plenty of my stand by RCBS SWC boolit but not a single 358429 to be had!

Fired up the pot and made a couple dozen and sent the best 16 or so to him to try out with a handfull of the RCBS to boot.

If boolits will be currency, I'll probably still be broke. :)

I have an unrealistic fear of running out. Therefore, I like to keep at least two thousand boolits on hand for each firearm I cast for.

Hickory, seems to me that there isn't anyone telling you to stop, so I guess you should just keep going until one side of the house starts sinking into the ground........ :bigsmyl2:

Cast until you get it out of your system. Then let me know which moulds you mo longer want to cast with. I'll take them off your hands. Won't even cost you much.

Stew

I shoot IPSC so my consumption is above average I'd say. I usually have 8000-10.000 boolits sized & lubed. I rarely have many cartridges on hand, since I shoot about 700 a week!

By all means cast away as if there's no tomorrow. It' not like boolits have a date of expiration on them! Okay I guess the water quenched boolits' hardness will decrease after 10-15 years, but still

I cast with two 3-cav iron molds. My count is about 500/hour. Now.... if I had been doing that every morning for 5 months... I'd be a very rich man :lovebooli

... should I have a keep on casting until I get out of my system?

Yes, always.
(You likely won't get casting "out" of your system, but my answer remains the same)

I have no idea how many I have on hand other than to say "not enough." :coffee:

This happened to me 3-4 years ago while swaging .224 caliber bullets
using 22LR cases for jackets and ended up with about 8 thousand bullets.

It gives a man a sense of fulfillment knowing that he
"may have enough", at least for a while anyway.

I like making things that work well, but I now
need is to stock pile some primers for the future.:p

What does " too many" mean?

I don't have any where near enough lead let alone cast bullets. Short on time and money so have to make do with what I have.
If money and time where not an issue then if I had enough lead I would like 10,000 for each caliber and I have 40 different molds and 3 or 4 more coming so that would be a lot of bullets. So nice to dream and wish but it will never happen I am to old to sit and cast that long but sure would be nice.

This thread aint making me feel better.

With the job I have now I get very little casting time, so I'm down to about a thousand or so of each cal. On the bright side I dont accept WWs any more unless they are forced on me. :violin:
