Has anyone painted their black rifle stock? Camoflage? If so what brand of paint did you use and did it cover good?

What are you trying to accomplish?

I've used the Dura Coat stuff and can tell you it works great.

I did a custom Mark I Ruger auto pistol a year or so ago and it has withstood the usual handling and such with out a ding or scratch.

If you go to the web site you might get some cool idea for your rifle, I've been toying with the idea of a "Diamond Plate" AK!

Check this out...I thought it was pretty neat so I cut and pasted it to a Word doc for future reference...

I saw pics of a stock that had been refinished using spray on truck bed liner. It comes in an aerosol can that you can buy at the auto parts stores. It's tough and if properly applied can provide a real "grippy" finish.

I've used Krylon, Dura Coat, and Brownells Aluma-Hyde II. All work; some are more durable than others. It ain't rocket science, as evidenced by this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6q6D7Njvedo&feature=related

Trust me, if that kid can do it, so can you!

i can vouch for the aluma hyde II, it works very well, so does kg gunkote, which is what we use on the majority of our guns.

I have used several different spray paints, everything from Gov't issue spray paint, Krylon, Rustoleum, and the 97 cent stuff from Walmart. Basiaclly, anything that will stick will work, the flat drab stuff will do a better job of camoflaging, since the reflection is less. Edges will wear more than flat areas, like any finish.

For prep remove all the oil from the gun, then spray. If you don't like the colors, the cheaper paint is easy to remove with paint thinner.

I put on a base coat, then break up the outline with a couple of darker colors. If it gets too dark, spray a litlle more base color.

Hope this helps,

Robert

The stock on my Rem 788 .223 was very blond (fine American "hardwood") when I got it. I remembered my dad staining a pellet rifle stock using coffee many years ago, so I figured I'd try it. Couldn't get the Remington plastic stock finish off the wood, so the coffee stain wouldn't penetrate the wood. I bought a can of Krylon brown and a can of their avocado green spray paints. Painted the stock brown, then splotched it with the green. Looks good 30+ years later. Some scratches, but generally still in great shape.

Stew

The black stock is on a bolt gun and the wife would like it PINK.

The black sock is on a bolt gun and the wife would like it PINK.

Then by all means, DuraCoat is the way to go. They have several shades of pink and red.

I'll paint it whatever color she wants, as long as she goes shooting. She even expressed interest in hunting!!!

If it has been shot before use a wax and grease remover to make sure all contaminates are removed from the stock first and just to make sure the paint you choose sticks good get some adhesion promoter, sold at most auto paint stores, it will help make sure the paint stick without any fish eyes, peeling or wrinkles.

With my name, I paint them to look like (what else?) ROCK!

You can get any number of stone finish paints at Home Depot or similar. This one is sandstone, and I have others in black granite. Just take note where you put them down!

DH, nope that's my .223 coyote rifle. It wears a different scope now, but the rest of it is still sandstone.
