I have an opportunity to get a Remington 700 stainless, 270 W, with a Boyds thumbhole stock and a 4-12 swarovski scope. I have heard others at the range tell me that a 270 does not shoot cast well. I find that hard to swallow, what say you?

I would like to get this rifle and develop some cast loads for it. I would have to invest in molds, sizers and checks too for I have nothing in 270 Win. The price is $749 and the scope alone is worth more than that.

Show me what your 270 will do with cast!

Thanks, malcolm

270 Win will shoot cast about as well as anything else. Big case is a tad inefficient but that's nothing to loose sleep over.

I've not played with mine to much. Have the RCBS 150 grain bullet which is a very high BC bullet for cast. All I've done is shoot moderate loads of H4198 at around 2,000 fps and that works. No surprise there. Don't worry much about what people say how they won't shoot. They will say that then tell you a 7mm Mauser shoots cast great. The more you think about that one the less sense it makes. You can sometimes pick up moulds off Ebay reasonable as there isn't as much bid pressure on them as a more popular caliber.

sizing dies seem to be a problem a 270 is .277 and most dies are for a 7mm that is 284 I did find a 280 sizer but its for a lube press and I like the push thru.
As for the 284 size it didnt shoot good if anyone needs a 280 lyman will take $20 shipped

I sent Buckshot a boolit I pushed through the barrel of my Browning and he made me a sizing die to fit. Have not shot it extensively yet but it should be just fine when I refine a load. I have the RCBS 150 grainer and have been experimenting with 4198 and 4227.

I have a .280" die here that came along with a used sizer. I assumed it was for nose sizing 7mm bullets on the bore ride section. Then there is paper patch sizing the 7mm bullet down before wrapping. Two wraps would give you .287” Then run that through your 7mm size die to finish.

My 270 Win H&I die is a .278”. They are in stock items. For a Lee die I suppose you'd have to get one made up. Not sure if a .280” bullet would chamber or not. One could always turn a thousandths off the case necks.

I have a Ruger M77 in 270 Win that I size to 280 for. It has a long throat. I size to .278 for a Ruger #1b in 270 Win. It has a shorter throat.

Most of the RCBS molds will only throw a .277-.278 bullet. Several of the old lyman 270 molds will throw as large as .280-.283.

a .280 sizer might also be useful for sizing 7mm bullets prior to paper patching. I haven't tried it, I have a 280 sizer but don't own any 7mm rifles.

Was reading my recently purchased copy of Pet Loads this morning, it lists several cast bullet small game loads and discusses the concept favorably...... I believe the article was written in the 60s...
