This little darling has been in the works for almost a year. It started out as a 7 mm. Mag and I found a heavy round blank on the EE. I had a friend install and chamber it as well as give it a tapered octagon contour. The sights are a Lyman 48 (first model) and 77 globe. I bought an NIB Redfield Palma that was discontinued in the eighties for it, but the Ruger's receiver was too wide. The barrel is stainless, so it won't get blued. I may give it the GunKote treatment or have it powder coated.

This is going to be a cast bullet rifle so it won't be seeing any condom bullets. It is button rifled and I'm not sure of the maker, so it may not be a great barrel. I may have to fire-lap her. I'll be loading up some ammo tonight. I have five boxes of Herter's virgin brass that is decades old. Made in Sweden, probably by Norma, it has drilled flash holes, not the punched ones on American cases. The summer is looking interesting.

The Lyman 48 wasn't working out too well. It was too far away from the eye and the adjustments needed tightening. We replaced it with a Parker-Hale that has a long arm for lots of eye relief adjustment. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Wow! What ya got, 'bout 28" of barrel?

I would draw file the barrel, then hand polish down to at least 320 grit, and have it bead blasted for a soft, grey finish.

If my #1 Hornet doesn't work out with cast, it may also be rebarreled tapered octagon, but to .30-40 Krag, and probably shorter and lighter contour.

Truely a sweet rifle! Let us see the results of how it shoots and with what loads!

Beautiful, indeed....and here I sit, waiting for Ruger to make their run of #1A rifles in the grand old .303 cartridge.

I have plenty of dies, moulds, brass and all the other good stuff; all I need is the RIFLE. My Enfields are eagerly awaiting the new gal, too....new blood is always good for the gang.

Dunno if I'll restrict it to cast loads or not.

One of my very few quibbles with the #1 is the difficulty of PROPERLY mounting an aperture sight. The aperture itself should only be maybe an inch or so from one's eye, and that is a tough proposition on a #1. I still love 'em, though.

I know the Ruger run of #1 .303's is out. I have two friends who each got one. One guy works at the ruger plant in Newport, NH.

That is a beautiful barrel and I like the .303cartridge. I didn't want to drill the receiver on my #1 so this is how I did it.

Brownells sells an adaptor similiar to that. I have one on my No 1.

I made the one pictured on my Ruger. They are not difficult if you have a milling machine. I have made three. They are, however very time time consuming. The nice thing about making your own is that you can make it as long as you want so it can be closer to your eye.. It is not the kind of rig you would take hunting but if I ever did take the rifle afield it would be wearing a Unertal ten power scope.

I have ordered one of the Ruger No1A's in .303 that are coming out.

You should know: A group of dedicated shooters in Canada proposed the idea and took it to Ruger. That's where the initiative came from and Ruger followed through.

Yup, I was one of them. It was originally going to be a limited production run and I would have taken two. Since, it is going to be a catalogue item, but who knows for how long, I only ordered one. I'm having the Lyman 48 sight replaced with a Parker Hale with a long arm, so eye relief won't be a problem. I'll put up photos when i get it back.

If you pull the Hornet barrel, I would be interested in buying it. Frank at: franklinzeman@sbcglobal.net

I noticed that the No1. light sporter is also available now in 30-30. Both it, and the .303 are pretty interesting.
