I am not new to reloading , but I am new to cast boolits.
I have virtually no cast boolit data.

Can you all give me some powder suggestions and starting advice for cast in my 243 bolt gun?

I have boolits from a Lyman 245497.

I am waiting for the 4th edition of the Lyman cast book and the 3rd edition is out of stock everywhere I have checked.

Thanks for the help and have a good 'un, ~thecyberguy

Tcg, The first thing to do is to slug your bbl. to determine what diameter to size #245497 to. Although I cast & shoot #245496 and size to .244" (Ruger #1), these loads work well:

14 - 16 grs. H/IMR 4198

14.5 - 15.5 grs. WC 820 (AA #9 burn rate)

14 - 16 grs. AA 5744

ive been playing around allot with the 243 in cast, so much fun.

the bullet im shooting is the RCBS mold after lubing and the gas check it comes to 98 grain.

the gun is a rem 700 bolt action 20 inch BBL.
here is what works in my gun:

IMR 4756 11.4 grains grouping of about 3/4 inch at 100 yards.

IMR 4759 from 20 to 24 grains velocity i from 1800 to 2300 at the 24 grain end, accuracy in my gun was around the 21 grain mark.

IMR 4227 from 19 to 23 grain. velocity from 1900 to 2500 fps. best accuracy in my gun was the 21 grain load running at about 2100 fps and group size of about 1 inch at 100 yards. (still need to tweak that one, has best potential).

ive also had some nice results using IMR 4831 at around 39grains and high velocity but that info is not in any books and was extrapolated from jacketed bullet info'.
use this info at your own risk, these loads work in my gun.
work up loads carefully you are morel likely to lose accuracy before you get into the high pressure problems but always check and play safe.

Hi Maven,

Thanks for the info.

Unfortunately I have none of the powders you mention.

The boolits I have were given to me already sized to 244 Ø. I have shot some with trail Boss and printed a .7" 3 shot group at 50 yards. So, without slugging the barrel yet, i felt they were sized properly.

I am looking to get a bit more speed than I get with Trail Boss.
The powders I have are :
Unique
H4895
Red Dot
Hercules 2400
IMR 3031
IMR 4227
IMR4895

Guess I should have given this info first.
Thanks for the help and have a good 'un, Guy

phishroy,
Thanks for the info.
Is IMR4756 the same thing as IMR SR4756?
This is a powder that was given to me and i have never loaded anything with it, but i have on the shelf...LOL
I have a tendency to stick to something once I find it works. Although in my latter years....I like playing around more than I used to......more patience if not a bit more wisdom....LOL

Thanks for the info and you have yourself a good 'un, Guy

yes, its is the IMR SR 4756
in my lyman book it gives a range from 9 to 11,7 grains and velocity from 1498 to 1751 fps

Try 12-14 gr 2400. You will hit a sweet spot somewhere around there. FWIW I raise my sights 42 clicks on a 1/4 scope for 100 yards for 13 grain load.
