I received My 30cal Fatter Mould on Friday. Just so happens I was in the middle of casting some 8mm RCBS bullets. So I clean up the new Lee mould Slapped on a set of handles and proceeded to cast three to four hundred bullets. The casting went real smooth not a single problem. I about had a brain freeze trying to figger out which guns to use to test this new bullet. I settled on a 1909 Arg,1891Arg ,#1 mark 3 and a #4 mark 1*.To make thing simple I used a load of 20gr of AA 5744 with a CCI200 primer the bullet was sized to .314 all loads had the bullet touching the rifling. The lead alloy was 4 parts ww to 1 part lino. The 1891 Arg did not do to well. The 1909 Arg shot 2 ten shot groups of less the 2 inch's plus 2 five shot groups around 1.5 inch's. The #4 mark 1 shot one ten shot group at 2.0 inch's and one at 1.75 the wind was switching 180 degrees. I didn't buy the mould for target work but it shows promise.

..............It's nice when things work out. Had the 1891 Argentine shown before it wanted a .314" slug?

No that particular 1891 Arg likes 314299 that's been put thru a .312 push up die. The 1909 Arg has a larger throat and as I was making loads for it I thought I would give it a try in the 1891.They feed in smoothly so the case neck was big enough. I just casted a 20 pound pot of the 30 cal fatter this morning That's 3 pots since Friday just amazing how fast it goes with 6 holes. With the groups I am getting with the 1909 I think I will use it at our clubs Sept CBA Military Shoot in the issue class for score. As a after thought the military match's we have been running for two years. We allow jacket bullet shooters to compete side by side with the cast bullet shooters. Not once has a Jacketed bullet shooter ever won against a cast bullet shooter.

What kind of groups you getting and at what distance? I have an engineers 1891 carbine and I shoot the 314299 out of it unsized (about .314) and the groups are acceptable, but not what I would like. Ditto with my Type 99 Jap, basically the same bullet diameter with a bigger case, same bullet and I get about two inches at 100 yards with it. Now the Jap, so far, shoots jacketed more accurately then the cast. I'm still working on loads for the cast to see if I can shrink them.

The 1891 Arg that I used on Sat was one that I pickup about 5 years ago for 50.00 account a spider used the middle of the barrel for a nest. The rifling is perfect on both sides.Have been looking for a sporter without a cut down barrel to put into the stock so far no luck. Then one day I decide to shoot it I used 18 gains of AA5744 / CCI200 primer / Lyman 314299 sized to .312 NRA lube. It shot groups in the range of 2" to 2.5" at 100 yards. With the bad spot in the bore I didn't think that was to bad. Then when I was working up some loads Sat I loaded 20 rounds of the Lee Fatter sized at .314 with 20 grains of AA5744 / CCI 200 primer. The 10 shot groups that I got where 3.5" with a core group of 6 to 7 just under 2". Have not looked to see if leading mite have caused it. But plan to play with it latter. Leaving for work soon.

That sounds pretty good. Whenever there's a place in the barrel that raises doubts as to how it will shoot, it more likely does then not, surprise you how well it still shoots. Yours sounds like one.

What's the book say your muzzle velocity is?

The 1891 Arg sure did surprise me the way it shot. The spot in the middle of the barrel has interrupted the rifling where the spider made its nest. The load that shot well was Lyman 314299 with 18grs of AA5744 and a CCI 200 primer. In a fairness to spiders I cannot prove that's what caused the damage to the barrel.

I knew someone would ask about the velocity. For the 303 Brit #4 mark 1 with the 30 cal Fatter it was 1650fps . Now for the confessing I had planed to chronograph all the loads. But I had a slight mishap and shot my chronograph it was a clean kill no suffering to the chronograph that is.But on the other hand the laughing in my ears was unbearable. I was still in shock but my shooting buddy was having a hard time controlling himself. Will dig out my other Chro. this week and check out the rest of the loads plus some new ones.

Last night Duane stopped by with some groups that he had shot with the 30 cal Fatter. They where in 7.62x54 Russian and 7.62x53 Arg. The groups where all 2" and under 10 shot at 100 yards. Will get the loads latter and post them.
